Scene & Heard -- wherein local music scene makers give you the lowdown on the soundtrack to their lives.
Nick Ray is a man for all seasons. When not holding down the bar at Lawrence's brand new high-end taqueria, Esquina (try the fish tacos, as well as the pork ones -- you'll die of happiness), Ray DJs as the Jet Set Bachelor.
He's also been the master of ceremonies for many fashion events around Lawrence -- and when he emcees an event, you're going to be entertained by his wit and have the pants charmed off you. Needless to say, he's just the sort of gent we needed to make a playlist for us, which you can hear after the jump.
"I am always swept away by the ethereal vibes of Fever Ray's music. We're blessed to have this ambient dancehall redo--a neo-diva club jam of esoteric proportions!"
"Antichrist was hands-down the most remarkable film experience for me in the past year and Charlotte's performance was transcendent. It translates in her latest album as she updates the yé-yé girl a-go-go into a postmodern fuzzocalypse."
Ginuwine - "Pony" (Boson Dubstep Remix)
"Yeah... Another pony reference--but it's spring! And nothing like grinding like a 8th grader to some crunchy beats to celebrate the vernal equinox."
"High brow funky flute jazz meets low brow 90s party R&B: What's not to like?! This has been a sunrise jam for me the past few weeks."
Radiohead - "Wish You Were Here" (Pink Floyd cover with Sparklehorse)
"Change of seasons always puts me in a nostalgic mood I suppose. Regardless, this cover is flawless and makes my heart swoon lazily across the prairie horizon."
Moloko - "The Time Is Now (Sunshine)" (Deadsteppas Boot)
"This aeriform remix puts such a nouveau spin on Moloko that it spurs me into a state of pseudo-psychedelia! A breathe of fresh air indeed!"
