Talib Kweli at the Midland, May 10

The last time Talib Kweli meandered this direction, he landed at the Granada in Lawrence. (Check out Nadia Pflaum's review of the concert -- and afterparty -- here.) By all accounts, it was one kick-ass, conscious party, featuring an opening set by local MC Steddy P and a slew of other local rappers in the audience. Fear not rising gas prices: the chronicler of Crooklyn will be coming to a much closer metro venue for his next visit to Kansas City. He'll rock the mic with the help of DJ Hi-Tek at the Midland Theatre on May 10th, supporting the release of the duo's follow-up to 2000's Train of Thought. Revolutions Per Minute is due out the day after Talib Kweli's Kansas City date, and here's what Hi-Tek told our reviewer about the album last time they were in town:

As for what to expect on the new album, Hi-Tek quoted Jay-Z: If lyrics sold / truth be told / I'd probably be / Lyrically Talib Kweli.

Kweli played Crossroads KC last June, the day Michael Jackson died. It was insanely hot, two of the openers didn't show up, and he didn't come on stage until after 11:30. I'm a big fan, but it was a complete embarrassment. He lost a lot of goodwill with his fans and should send anyone who suffered through that dreadful night free tickets to all future KC shows. Here's a review from the Star: http://backtorockville.typepad...
