Filthy Jim was one of those area acts that I never truly appreciated until they were gone. After playing shows around Lawrence for over a decade, the band played a farewell show at the Replay Lounge on New Year's Eve 2007. The band went out in style, though, Every person who'd ever played in the scuzz-rock foursome made an appearance and rocked out on at least one song.
This track is from their first release, the 1998 Racing Stripes 7-inch. "Rebel Boy" is the b-side and shows that the band is capable of a lot more than the "Whiskey and porn" style of rock and roll for which they're best known. Yes, even though they did title the band after a slang term for a used condom, and yes, even though the band in fact titled their debut full-length Whiskey & Porn, Filthy Jim is still capable of some complex musical structures, as this nearly six-minute track proves.
