Pitch last week from Portland, fresh off a date at the Sasquatch! Music Festival at the Gorge Amphitheater in Washington, to talk a little about the tour.

How was Sasquatch?

Unbelievable. That's just a one-of-a-kind festival. We went on at sunset, and it was so picturesque, and you're looking up this hill at the audience. It's amazing. We're playing lots of outdoor venues this tour, which is fun for us.

Did you see any especially cool sets?

Ween. We got to meet Ween. That was really cool.

What's the audience looking like on this tour versus earlier tours?

The audience is pretty similar. I guess I'm learning more and more about it, but it's all kinds of people - you got your green man, your blue man, your spandex creatures. Then there's the girls, and some bros. Actually, the other day we met this dad who'd brought his daughters to the shows, and he was like, [lame dad voice], "Finally, music my kids like that I can listen to, too." That was pretty funny.

I'd imagine you're pretty excited to play the new stuff and maybe a little tired of the old stuff. What kind of obligation do you feel to play the last album?

The new ones are definitely more fun for us to play. We probably address that by playing the old stuff differently.

Do you guys use laptops and prerecorded tracks or is everything live?

No, and we take a lot of pride in not using prerecorded tracks. A lot of bands use them, and use them well, but we don't. Ben [Goldwasser, cofounder of the band] will sometimes use a laptop for tones, and "Flash Delirium" has a drum machine for a few bars. But otherwise everything's real, created with human hands by the five of us onstage.

What do you think of [opening act] Tame Impala? Did you guys handpick them?

We picked them after randomly playing a few shows with them in Australia, and it's been working out so well. We basically instantly became friends, knew we would be friends for a long time. They're just great guys, and incredible musicians. And this tour has been really cool for them because they never been to U.S. before - these are their first shows in the states.

What are you guys listening to right now on the bus?

Oh wow. Okay. Zapp and Roger. The new Television Personalities album. I'm always listening to R. Stevie Moore. The new Violins album is really great, but it's not out yet. Van Dyke Parks. I was listening to that live Velvet Underground album with the girl's butt on the cover the other day. Great album.

Do you guys go out after shows or do you just get on the bus?

I tend to want to enjoy the nightlife of any particular town.
