The quintessential American rock band? The Truckers open for Petty tonight at the Sprint Center.
I saw Tom Petty back in high school, out at Sandstone. I was way over Petty by then, into, ah, way cooler shit, and I really only went because all my friends were going. Then the band started playing and I was like, "Oh, wait: Tom Petty kicks ass. And he has like a fuckin' hundred awesome songs." And I rocked out all night. A guy like Petty, you forget how good he is. You take him for granted. It's foolish to do so.
And because he has great taste, he's picked as openers theDrive-By Truckers, a Southern rock band that embodies everything I love about rock and roll. True American rock music, tonight at Sprint Center.
In Lawrence:
Minus the Bear at the Granada, with Everest and Mini Mansions.
Noise rock from Lightning Bolt at the Jackpot, with This is My Condition and Gay Beast.
