'Why are there no great delis in Kansas City?'

Napoleon Bakery makes a nice Reuben panini, but it's no deli

Here's a question I get a lot, usually from people who have moved to Kansas City from one of the coasts: Why isn't there a decent Jewish delicatessen in the metro?

It's a good question. There used to be: In the 1940s, the Kansas City City Directory listed 67 delicatessens operating in the metro, including the Milwaukee Deli, the Chicago Deli, the Cincinnati Deli and the New York Bakery and Delicatessen, which outlasted all of its rivals until it closed, somewhat uncermoniously, last year. It's now a flea market.

You need plans. Fat City has a recycle bin full of listings. In this post, all our problems are solved.

It's not often that you get to see a submarine commissioned in Kansas City. But that's the drill on Saturday as the Boulevard Brewery sponsors a live broadcast of the commissioning ceremony for the USS Missouri in Groton, CT on the Power & Light District's KC Live! Stage.

The festivities run from 9:30 a.m. to noon with breakfast and lunch specials, as well as plenty of limited edition merchandise. Boulevard has donated $1 for every barrel of beer sold in the state since May 1 in order to help fund the commissioning.

William Brown's wife finds sex tape her husband made with 16-year-old girl; Brown gets 15 years

William Brown needs to jack himself in the face for being stupid.
  • William Brown needs to jack himself in the face for being stupid.

If you're cheating on your wife, you probably don't want to videotape it and leave the DVD where she'll find it. Common sense, right? If you're cheating on your wife with a 16-year-old girl, then you really don't want to videotape it because she's going to call the cops on your ass. William Brown found out the hard way that taping yourself sexing a 16 year old is considered producing child pornography -- and he'll have the next 15 years in federal prison without parole to smack himself in the head and repeat, "stupid, stupid, stupid."

Posted By on Fri, Jul 30, 2010 at 11:53 AM

Heartless_Bastards_Erika_opt.jpg

This exact same show happened a couple months ago at the Record Bar. (Well, almost. Switch Sons of Great Dane for the Builders and the Butchers, and you've got it.) Fortunately, that doesn't make the lineup any less awesome. For all our Lawrence peeps who missed Ohio's other kick-ass garage rock group, Heartless Bastards, at the Record Bar in April, here's your second chance.

The show is at the Jackpot on July 31. Be there, or miss Erika Wennerstrom's sinewy yowls and blues-rock fury.

Until October 7, we'll feature one outstanding dish or beverage each weekday. Agree with us or make your own suggestions -- just don't come between us and these fantastic things to eat or drink.

For many Kansas Citians, it's a Saturday morning tradition: Get up early, throw on some clothes, wander through the stalls at the City Market and have breakfast at the venerable Cascone's Grill at 17 East Fifth Street.

Contrary to various rumors, Streetside Records' ridiculous sale signs do not mean they're closing. Unlike most record stores across America, they're alive and well. So well, in fact, that local MC Reach and DJ Ataxic are making an in-store appearance there on Saturday afternoon.

Pick up some real, legal music for once (just kidding, what?) while you check out two 30 minute sets from these two, from 2 to 3PM on Saturday.

There are still more questions than answers in Larry Schnackenberg's reappearance.
  • There are still more questions than answers in Larry Schnackenberg's reappearance.

Update II (10:03 a.m. July 30): There are still more questions than answers about the reappearance of Larry Schnackenberg, the Lenexa man who disappeared for 20 days before being found Wednesday by a parks employee (who just happened to know Schnackenberg). His sons didn't have many answers for us yesterday during a press conference. But it sounds like their father hasn't even answered their questions.

"Although questions remain, we are simply enjoying the fact

that he's still in our lives," David Schnackenberg said yesterday during a press conference (via the Star).
