Vans Warped Tour has reported that a 26-year-old man at Warped Tour died yesterday at the tour's Kansas City date. The name of the victim has not been released, and there has been no confirmation as to the cause of death.
The tour's Twitter has issued the following statements on the death. It looks as though Warped Tour may change venue rules to allow fans to bring in water with them; but, there is no confirmation on whether or not dehydration was the cause of the fan's death.

it was monster tour water. it was just a can of water with the monster logo cuz they were the main sponsor
I was at this show. My friend got really dehydrated and fainted. We went to get first aid but the security people didn't know where anything was. We also were in the tent/building with the water fountain you could fill your bottle in and they kicked us out saying you had to buy a special wristband to go in there.
I actually was standing right there when this man died. I felt the worst, they tried to get him to breathe. but it just wasnt happening.
My heart goes out to the friends and family
I worked security for this event and watched this man die. He hit his head after being dropped while crowd surfing. There was nothing that could have been done. Lower the cost of water and people will still crowd surf. Lets not jump to conclusions about the responsibility of Warped Tour or the vendors. The fault lies with the individual who was taking a risk for a cheap thrill. Think about it before you go up next time...
I went to warped in Orlando and it's was freakin' hot, I'm usually very sensitive to high temperatures, I usually faint because of low pressure and low sugar in my blood, knowing that I said f$%# you to the price of the waters, my life s worth more than that! I had like 6 bottles of water, I had a milkshake, and chiken with french fries, and guess what?! no dehydration at all! Every time i started to feel sick because of the heat i would enter the place that they were doing first aid in people because they had an ac there (it was still kinda hot there but yeah) and sit there for a while until i felt better, and of course, with a bottle of water in hands :D
My point is, you only get dehydrated if you want to, I stayed in the venue from 11am till 9pm and survived without a problem...
I think most of people there forget about dehydration, what vans could do is put some signs there like: DON'T FORGET TO DRINK WATER AND EAT! DON'T DRINK ALCOHOL!
I saw some people passing out and it wasn't fun! of course you want to see a lot of bands and don't wanna waste your time taking care of yourself, but see what happened to that guy... you never know, it could be you ;/
This is such a sad story, however you can not blame Warped Tour for this.
Warped Tour doesn't decide prices of anything except the tickets themselves. The people working as paramedics and body guards don't work for Warped Tour they work for the venues.
Warped Tour doesn't come with guidelines, you have to go there a few times and learn. You have to in a way be skilled at it.
You ARE allowed to bring in one sealed bottle of water.
To save money, you fill it up at water fountains.
To keep cool, you go to the bathroom in between sets and put your wrists under cold water because it cools the blood stream. Also in between sets you sit under trees in the shade.
You may say that the water tastes bad, you don't want to leave a stage, or it's too hard to find but your health is worth the struggle.
Moving away from your spot is worth having the opportunity to be able to see the bands again in the future.
My heart goes out to this guy and his loved ones. May he rest in peace.
I went to Warped Tour at Burcham Park in Lawrence KS, there were trees, shade, and awesome vendors. I went to the first Warped Tour at Sandstone--it was IN the amphitheater, not in the gross, shadeless parking lot outside the amphiteater. There was shade, seating, the lawn, and it wasn't bad.
Warped Tour does NOT have to locate their tour in a crappy shadeless parking lots next to amphitheaters; that's ridiculous. It's up to them how much work they put into setting up the tour and what they require of potential venues. It's also up to them whether they advertise the show as if it is inside a venue rather than in a parking lot. We have to take care of one another.
My deepest condolences to the family.
I got really sick from heat the last time I went to Warped. They had a small hose or pipe cut for misting, but no water fountains at all. Everyone was putting their mouth or salvaged beer cups on the mist pipe.
I was told I had to throw away my water container to enter--I put it back in the car and got in the end of the line (no reentry, of course).
The only free water source was the bathroom. The faucets were too short to fit a bottle under and they were completely disgusting; there was standing swampy water and really gross stuff.
A Solo cup fir better under the faucet, but when I tried to buy an empty cup or a cup or water (instead of a tall bottle) they said it would be full beverage price, like $5 or more. The person working actually got annoyed and said 'we're here to make money, not hand out water'. A lot of kids got beer cups out of the trash and filled them from these disgusting faucets.
This was a combination of gravel and blacktop-- a lot of bands were playing under a tiny tent in a windy, dusty, shadeless gravel lot. Anyone who got misted, then walked around ended up coated in gravel dust.
Several people were lying on the ground by the mist or swooning in the few shadows. I remember two guys puking while trying to cool off; both looked like they needed saline IVs. I don't remember seeing a single person that seemed drunk. It was also not nearly as hot as it has been this year, of course.
I came hoping to see one or two of the touring bands and left about 90 minutes later without seeing either. It was such an insult to the most basic human needs that I have never gone back. Kids already get screwed and ripped off at shows--no reentry at 10-hour-long shows, no chairs, $5 sodas, inedible food--fuck anyone who wants to put them in the hospital on top of that.
I went in '09 and they let me bring in my own bottle of water, it just has to be sealed. You can't open it.
If a profit is to be made from a public event such as this, it's a public safety concern to make sure that plentiful water and shade are available to patrons. Selling water for profit during a heat emergency is beyond disgusting.
Until policies and attitudes change regarding the treatment of human beings, I will not spend another dime at Sandstone Amphitheater.
Maybe Coke or Pepsi should look into Donating water to the Venues...
i went to warped tour this year and was about to buy a three dollar bottle of water from a stand when some guy from a band trying to raise funds offered me a bottle of water for one dollar, it is terrible news that this guy died and it made me really sad but i agree that it is not vans responsibility to make sure everyone is well hydrated there is other options if you don't have the money to buy water...my heart goes out to this mans friends and family, may he RIP
Not worth dieing for this lame music. Go see a Slayer show.
I was there all day at Bonner Springs. The had 3 misting stations and 2 spots to refill water bottles with 5-7 spouts on each not including the bathrooms you could use to refill. A bottle of water cost $4 so even if they didn't let you bring in water, $4 is not overpriced if your smart enough to re-use it.
My prayers are with that young mans family though.
That is horriable to hear. I was there and it was really hot. I was able to bring a bottle of water in with me and they had a few places to fill it back up. some more watering holes would be good but other then that just change the date thats about all you could do.
I was there it was terribly hot
I'm sorry, but it is one's personal responsibility to stay hydrated
I was there from 11am to 11pm and had no problems, you should no going in it's going to be hot and bring plenty of money so you can afford $4 waters
I drank plenty of beers that day, but made sure to follow it up with water and gatorade
If your feeling terrible you should of left, the music isn't worth your life
You guys dont even Know how it was there who wasnt there. It was so hot and in a big black parking lot and only One Fountain Available. I was hot and Miserable and sick there. I passed out in what little shade there was for 30 minutes. It was horrible hot and wrong. That death is on the Vendors hands in my opion.
As ladylcuy mentioned, one to two days in advance. It takes 24-48 hrs for your body to hydrate.
IT SOUNDS LIKE U GUYS SAT IN REALLY HOT WEATHER TO LISTEN TO REALLY SHITTY MUSIC. ITS A WONDER ANY OF U MADE IT THIS LONG. PHIL ANSELMO 4 PRESIDENT
Hydration needs to be done one to two days before your out in the heat.
I went to warped on one of the hottest days the east coast had seen in a long time. Yes, it was hot. However, most of the security guards let you bring in water bottles as long as they are sealed. If they aren't they make you dump them but you can always stick a cap in your shoe for later. Not to mention most venues have misters, air conditioned tents for parents, merch tents and who knows what else. I highly highly doubt this was due to dehydration.
Worse comes to worse you can always go to the first aid tent and tell them you feel like you're about to faint. We had someone giving us free ice to chew because we were hot. Everyone isn't out to get you, so feel free to ask for something.
Water was overpriced though, as was food. That's not warpeds fault however.
I was a walking water/soda vender for the show last year. I have to admit that water is pricey, $4. I would just go to the rest rooms and fill my water bottle in the sink. I don't think Verizon Wireless Amptheather lets you bring in water bottles, sealed or not. So be prepared out there and keep hydrated. RIP to that guy though.
I went and brought three bottles of water and two bottles of Gatorade. So i don't know where this one drink nonsense is coming from. Plus they had plenty of places to refill and they had mist tents.

I was in the crowd during Four Years Strong when I walked over to M&M I could see them preforming CPR on him and he looked like a ghost... hard to watch.
You could bring in water as long as it wasn't opened before you got to the gate, and if you had a bag you could bring in more. Some guys had the National Guard water dispensing back packs and you could get plenty of refills and free monster.
I just want to set the record straight i was at this Warped Tour date...I watched that guy die and it was devastating...I didn't even try to bring a water bottle in because in the past they have made me throw it away and this year the venue did not let my friends bring their water bottles in! They are trying to cover their ass because some one died at their venue.

yes, they allow you ONE sealed water at kansas. only ONE. i had to refill my water with warm water in the bath room. its hard to find time to go to the bathroom or look for a fountain when you love the music so much (: i got hit in the head had a mild concussion and threw up during reel big fish, my favorite band , sure wish i would have had some fresh water in my backpack to help. half the people there are EXTREMELY broke highschool and college students. PLEASE cap. fed. park CHANGE THE RULES, let us have waters. did it really take a death for you to do this?
RIP Bro. Water at the venue was four bucks a bottle, there were ample places to refill. One vendor even let me dip my empty bottle into the cooler where they were icing down bottles. the bathrooms had running water. As far as security, i had 3 bottles of water as well as a frozen bottle in my bag-plus some other things i shouldnt have had-and the woman never said a thing to me. NOT POINTING FINGERS HERE-but i did see several people drinking beer, and a few people appeared intoxicated-if this was the case, not smart.
Julie-You have a reason to be pissed, your daughter did not receive proper care, and making her walk uphill to an aid station after vomiting is negligent, and you should pursue this further. I saw fire dept. tshirts in those aid stations-did no one have ice packs? was there no ALS there? My guess is that CAP FED has no contract for ALS care, only BLS with BSFD (?). Look into this further, it's sad and unfortunate that this happened
The "monster" you see the bands drinking is actually water. On the can you can see where is says "tour water" on it. They just put it in Monster cans for advertisment.
jaybrooke is right. I feel very bad this happened, regardless of the reason. My heart goes out to this poor guy's family and friends. I can't stop thinking about it and it really bothers me. It is a very sad situation. However, if it does turn out to be due to negligence on someone's part, they should be held accountable.

I don't really think blaming Warped rules, or defending what happened at Warped should be the main topic here. The problem at hand is that someone died, and that should probably be the main concern right now. There hasn't been any information released about the actual cause of death, so you can't really pass judgment on the whole situation just yet. In my opinion, right now we should be giving our condolences.
Makes sense, I've heard a bottle of water is ten bucks at most shows.
@Kevin Sez Not sure which of the 2 NY dates you're speaking about. I go to the Long Island date every year. I've never seen the water $7. Its $5 and that has NOTHING to do with Warped Tour charging that much. Venue food & beverages pricing is NOT up to the person holding the concert but the venue itself. Water fountains were everywhere (inside) and the water was cold. I filled up a few times. The line was never too crazy to wait on (never more then a 4 person line).
And we are speculating as to what the cause of death was. It may have been an issue this man had prior to warped.
I'll totally agree with @Nick last year I did most of the east coast, and every single date, was dumb people drinking too much beer. When its 110 outside. Dont pound down 5 beers. Save your $$ for water and gatorade.
The tragic irony of all of this is that the man died next to a water vendor. i walked by him and saw he was having a seizure and no one including the vendor was doing anything. his friend looked scared so i ran looking for a paramedic which was no were to be found. when i found one someone had already told him and he was running towards the guy. they didn't seem prepared if it was do to dehydration this should have never of happen.
We were there yesterday with my daughter. She drank only water and Gatorade and plenty of it, but still became dehydrated. Her friends became concerned because she did not look or feel well. They took her into the Monster tent to try to cool her down. While there she became physically sick and vomited. They immediately took her to the first air tent and was told they couldn't do anything for her there - they were only major medical emergencies. Unless she wanted them to call an ambulance they told her she had to go to the first aid booth at the top of the hill. (If you were there you know how steep the hill is!) Once they got up there, they were told they did not have any drinks or anything else to give her and they did not know why she was sent up to them. They directed her to a 3rd location, where surprise, surprise - she just got more of the same - no help whatsoever. They gave up, bought her more $4.00 water and took her to sit in the shade. This is unacceptable and the venue should take action! I also do not understand why they will not stamp people and let them go to their vehicle and be allowed re-entry. I wanted to go get a blanket to sit on and an umbrella for shade that I had left in my trunk. A woman in a turquoise shirt with some kind of authority, was very rude and would not allow it and would not explain the reason for the rule. She tried to tell me blankets were not allowed; which I know is not true - as I saw several. When I pointed that out she told me I could get it, but I could not come back in. Some people do not deserve to be in a position of power as it goes to their head. What is wrong with people anymore. UGH!!!
that death is on kevin's lyman head. in new york, the limit was one bottle, the water was $7 and there was only disgusting lukewarm toilet water available.
lyman brings plenty of money to these venues, he has an opportunity to keep prices lower for water (or allow all the water in that someone can carry)
Based on the number of 21+ year-olds I saw double-fisting Miller Lite tallboys, it wouldn't surprise me in the least if this were alcohol-related.
Regardless if he was able to bring in ONE bottle during the day, one bottle in 44 degrees isn't going to last a person for one day. Where I went to Warped, there was NO water fountains and they took the lids away, so you would have to throw the bottle after you finish drinking it. I have been going for three years and will never return. It's already over priced to get in and then food and drink alone is too much. 5 dollars for a bottle of water is not right. Either way, Warped Tour should just learn to be reasonable. Horrible, this had to happen while a man was enjoying what should have been a good day.
You're allowed to bring in sealed water bottles at venues at Warped Tour. You were in St. Louis and you were in Cleveland too. Same with Lilith Fair. That's been pretty standard on Warped for awhile now.
There were so many water fountians, you were allowed to bring in water, and if it was unsealed dump it out. I had plenty of water, if you're smart enough to go fill it up as soon as you can, after shows, inbetween shows, it was totally fine. And the water wasn't gross. It tasted the same.
@anon
'If it was dehydration I wouldn't be suprised. It looks like all the bands drinking "Monster" energy drink when all it is, is water in a can. Its advertisement that seems to let the younger crowd think "Well the rockstars drink Monster when it's hot, not water"'
That might be an acceptable reason if the man who died was a teenager or pretween.. But a 26 year old man? That has to be one manipulative nonthinking man if that's the case.. And I doubt it was....
i work on the crew and have filled plenty of water bottles for fans. all you need to do is ask!
This is a tragedy. Music is like a family and to loosing a fan at a show is terrible. My thoughts are with the
mans family and friends.
If this death was caused by dehydration Warped Tour should provided more water Fountians around the site to prevent long queues in the blistering sun where people would feel worse due to dehydration waiting. People go to the festival to see music and friends, bot having to worry about there health.
I've photographed two Warped Tours and went to one as a normal attendee. I was really lucky because they don't really care about the equipment I bring in, so I was able to wear a CamelBak full of water while carrying around my heavy camera equipment and escape into the air-conditioned rooms backstage if I needed it. But without that? I wouldn't go. It's too hot and the venues charge way too much for water.
Warped Tour does not control the price of water- it's the venues. The music venues charge $3-$5 a bottle for water inside the venue. While some venues allow sealed bottles, other venues won't let you bring water in at all. I saw a security guard in Indianapolis dump out six bottles of sealed water a kid was trying to bring in. It's ridiculous. The tour is during the hottest part of the summer and, in the Midwest, humidity is 80%+ daily. And the venues have no mercy. They want their money and they don't care who gets hurt or dies as a result of it. Sure, there are fountains. But do you really expect kids to abandon their hard-earned spots at the front of the crowd to go get a drink of water? No. The venues should provide free water instead of charging out the ass for it- they sell soda in larger quantities for cheaper, encouraging dehydration.
And poor Warped Tour takes the blame, when it's the greed of the venues that causes hundreds of kids to pass out daily from heat exhaustion and dehydration.
I came close to heat stroke 2 years ago at Marysville, due to dehydration and the heat obviously. I had to dump out my sealed water bottles before I came in, the water in the fountains and bathrooms is completely disgusting, and everyone was doing what I had to do, so it took almost 20 mins of waiting to get to fill up my water. I sat in the shade when I could (and when there WAS shade), and could not afford more than one water bottle and a SMALL amount of food. If Vans is running this whole thing, then shouldn't they control the price of water? And if they really want to make some money, lower the price of water and they will make tons.
