Looks like Vi Tran should be commanding a little more R-E-S-P-E-C-T these days. (Har, har.)

The local singer and songwriter has wrangled a band together, and they're opening for Aretha Franklin for the 1YEAR2GO countdown celebration for the opening of the Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts. The performance is on Sunday, September 26, at the good ole P&L on the KC Live! stage, and tickets are $35. Check out more details here.

@Skill Laimbeer: I'm just one of many, many Kansas City performers during the celebration. Others include the Wild Women of Kansas City (Myra Taylor, Millie Edwards, Lori Tucker and Geneva Price), Mark Lowrey, Megan Birdsall, The Elders, City In Motion Dance Theater, Kansas City Youth Jazz Combo, Stng Dance Theater, Trampled Under Foot, and many more.

One of these things is not like the other... seriously though, how did a musician who is known mostly for solo work and has only been on the KC music scene about a year get this gig? Where is Marva Whitney? Where is Ida McBeth? Hell, where are the Good Foot and HOD? Was there a Robert Johnson-esque crossroads deal going down here?
