Songwriters, what's better fodder for a ballad than the sad, downtrodden career of our Kansas City's professional baseball team? It's just begging to be turned into a tearjerking tale of noble defeat, am I right?

If you agree, you're in luck. The Royals are looking for a new theme song, to battle the Minnesota Twins' anthem, penned and sang by the Hold Steady's Craig Finn. It's called "Don't Call Them Twinkies," and the Royals' blog calls "one of the best baseball anthems in years." (Listen to it here.) "The gauntlet has been thrown down," says Ball Star. "And we can do this."

They even want your sad-bastard laments about the trials and tribulations of being a Royals fan:

Well, nobody said the Royals' new anthem had to be a rocking, good time.

(Let the Royals experience inspire you. Think Eddie Vedder's tribute to the Cubs.)

So this is a call. Go watch some highlights from the 1980s, listen to the fountains, grab a guitar -- and make some music.

Even better news: there's a prize involved if you pen the winning anthem. Send your final submissions here

All I can hear is the Ollie Gates chorus:

After Greinke at the top
The Five-Plus ERAs don't stop
Pop flys and our offense drop
Base hits, no speed, no pop
