There will likely not be another Talkin' Bolton
column.
I knew it. Well, here is another reminder then: Bolton will be at Yardley Hall at JCCC tonight performing numbers from his giant catalog of hits.
And tickets are only $130!
Jk, jk -- they're between $50 and $130. Not worth your money? Yeah, I guess I can understand that. These are tough economic times, and not everybody makes music blogger money.
In case you need some last-minute convincing, I spoke earlier this week with a casual Michael Bolton fan about the man and his music. He wished to remain anonymous -- not because he is embarrassed about liking Bolton, but because he does not understand the internet and is afraid of things he does not understand.
How old are you?
29.
How long have you been a Bolton fan?
Early nineties maybe? I have a pretty vivid memory of hearing "When I'm Back On My Feet Again" at a barbershop when I was maybe 11 or 12. I was reading a Sports Illustrated that had one of those plastic covers on it that they have in barbershops. You know what I'm talking about?
Of course.
Yeah, so I was sitting there in the barber chair with the cape thing on and that song came on and it was just electric to me. There was so much passion in his voice.
What barbershop? In Kansas City?
Hank of Hair, in Brookside. It's downstairs, kind of below Carmen's Cafe. They used to have a shoeshine guy in there.
Yeah, I know that place.
So I guess that would be the first time I remember hearing Bolton.
Did you go out and buy his album after that or anything?
No, I don't think I ever owned any of his albums. A few years ago I bought a Soul Provider cassette at a thrift store. I don't think I've ever listened to it, though. But I would hear Bolton songs when I was in my mom's car, because she'd always have the dial on KUDL.
What are some of your favorite Bolton songs?
"Time, Love and Tenderness." And then "Steel Bars," "How Can We Be Lovers?" and "Said I Loved You...But I Lied." Those are all just undeniable monster hits.
Agreed. "Soul Provider"?
Yeah, definitely. And "How Am I Supposed To Live Without You." He probably has around ten songs I would say that I really like.
Did you know that Bolton co-wrote "Steel Bars" with Bob Dylan?
Uh, duh.
And you saw Bolton live?
Yes, at Starlight maybe five years ago. I think I was living in Columbia at the time and I drove in for it.
How was the show?
Inspiring. I was singing my ass off. He came out in the middle of the audience during "When a Man Loves a Woman." I think he was holding a rose or something.
