Hidden Pictures wanna dance with somebody. They wanna feel the heat with somebody.
Here on the Internet, we have short attention spans and we don't like to pay for things. Free mp3 singles have emerged as one of the best ways for artists to get their stuff out there. With Single File, we'll be spotlighting hot local tracks that pass the Wayward smell test.
And the award for best album name of the year goes to...Hidden Pictures! The band's latest three-song EP,
which we brought your way earlier this week, is named after the most fab living diva, and the title track is itself quite fab, though in more of a '90s rock kind of way.
The band's a little more aggressive on this one than it's been on previous recordings -- an electric guitar rips through the whole thing, giving the track some extra drive and verve. The other thing I like about "Whitney Houston," which is what I like about a lot of songwriter Richard Gintowt's songs, is that it has a soft chorus. The verse is rollicking and the chorus soothes. Feels right.
The pairing of the electric and acoustic gives off a bit of a Son Volt vibe, but I also feel like there's some Lemonheads in here. That might just be because I've been listening to the Lemonheads too much lately. Listen for yourself at
Hidden Pictures' Bandcamp, where you can buy the whole damn EP for three measly dollars.
