"Every saga has its middle age...and this is what happens when Jay and Silent Bob get old." So begins every episode of director Kevin Smith's podcast with his Clerks cohort, Jason Mewes, unsurprisingly entitled "Jay and Silent Bob Get Old." Ostensibly, the podcast began as a way to tell the story of Smith and Mewes' time together.
Basically, the podcast was a more thorough, live retelling of the tale Smith told in his blog as "Me and My Shadow," which recounted Mewes' descent into and ascent out of addiction.
Since that story finished, it's become a regular fixture as part of the SModcast Podcast Network, which also features Smith doing podcasts with KROQ's Ralph Garman ("Hollywood Babble-On"), his producer, Scott Mosier ("SModcast"), and the story of where he grew up ("Highlands - A Peephole History"). This is to say nothing of the shows done by his longtime friends Bryan Johnson and Walter Flanagan ("Tell 'Em, Steve-Dave" and "Puck Nuts"). It's a family affair, to state it mildly.
Smith brought his one-man Q&A tour to the Midland earlier this year and sold that sucker out. Hopefully, the same thing will happen when he and Mewes take the stage on Monday, May 2. The podcast and show has become a little less deep than it was originally, existing primarilly as a way to keep Mewes accountable. (Although recent episodes have Smith discussing plans to make himself accountable, and using the program to document his planned weight loss. Remember when Smith couldn't fit in an airplane seat earlier this year? Yeah.) Other than that, recent shows have ranged from Smith's new flick, Red State, as well as Mewes' use of the Fleshjack (the gay male version of the Fleshlight, which is itself a sex toy in a tube).
Tickets go on sale this Friday, at 10:00 AM.
