If you've watched the right TV channels or been to a movie theater lately, you might have seen a preview for
Country Strong, an upcoming movie where Gwyneth Paltrow plays a down-and-out country singer. It's like
Crazy Heart, except it's about a woman, the script is bad, and the actors give you secondhand embarrassment.
Still, you shouldn't let the movie's obvious terribleness get in the way of competing in the Country Strong Singing Challenge this Saturday at the Sidecar at the Beaumont Club!
Amateur singers are invited to come to the Sidecar (4050 Pennsylvania) and sing a sixty-second a capella version of either "Country Strong" or Merle Haggard's "Silver Wings." Individual singers only -- no pairs or groups. You get one minute to perform in front of a panel of judges, and the winning contestant will get $500 and represent Kansas City in the national Country Strong competition, the winner of which receives a trip to Nashville and a meeting with a Sony Nashville Music exec. Plus, you get to be on TV. You could be a star!
It's this Saturday at 7 p.m.
