If it's too loud, Harry S. Truman, you're too old

  • President Truman listened to old people's music.

Let's take a break from hip sounds and digital-music trends for a minute. Let's put on a little Chopin and pretend it's the middle of the 20th century -- in the White House, and we are the 33rd president of the United States, Harry S. Truman.

Why, you ask?

Welp, ol' Harry was a Missouri man, born in Lamar in 1884. Of course, he went away for a while, to lead the nation and stuff. But he came back, and he's buried in Independence, in the lawn of the library named after him.

Also in Independence: the Harry S. Truman National Historic Site where, on January 11, an exhibit opens of 250 records that belonged to Harry and his family. Cleverly called It's Not Noise, It Is Music, the collection contains a lot of classical LPs.

Harry did not like the sounds considered modern. But he did like Mozart, Liszt, Broadway musicals, and the songs sung by his daughter, Margaret -- all of which are represented in the display. See it for free, daily through May 30.
