When Greg Tugman was downsized from his job at the Lawrence-based document-scanning company Vangent last year, his wife, Sandy, saw the writing on the wall. Her teaching job at Baker University wasn't all that stable, either. And then Greg couldn't find another corporate job.
"So I told Greg that it was time to open our cafe. It had been a dream of ours for years," Sandy Tugman says.
Fresh off the success of the Sonic Spectrum David Bowie tribute show, local indie rockers Soft Reeds headlined their own local showcase to a packed house Saturday night at Crosstown Station. Also on the bill were rock outfit Mr. History and Minden, the much-anticipated new project from former Kelpie frontman Casey Burge.
Just how bad are the roads? How about bad enough for a school bus to slide off the road and hit a utility pole at 107th and Bales? And how about a firetruck responding to the scene crashing into the bus? Yeah, it's that bad, according to KMBC.
Two students reportedly suffered minor injuries from the first crash, according to KMBC. However, KSHB cited school officials at Warford Elementary School in the Hickman Mills
School District who said there were no injuries. KSHB has a crew on the way to the scene. Let's hope they don't join the pileup.
UPDATE: The public visitation for longtime Kansas City Chiefs bandleader Tony DiPardo is scheduled for Tuesday, February 1, from noon to 9 p.m. in the Chicago Ballroom of the Hyatt Regency Hotel (2345 McGee in Kansas City, Mo.).
Original Story (January 27): Longtime Kansas City Chiefs bandleader Tony DiPardo has died, his family told Fox 4.
"Our grandpa passed away this morning at St. Luke's," DiPardo's family said in a statement posted by Fox 4.
"It was very peaceful, surrounded by family and friends. He was a wonderful man, a great grandfather, great husband, great father and he will be missed by all."

A Kansas City man is in critical condition after being shot at least twice during a home invasion early Sunday morning. KCTV5 reported that the man "was trying to protect his family and home" at East 86th Street and Winchester Avenue.
The man was reportedly shot at least twice during a struggle with an intruder. It's a scary story that only gets more disturbing when you find out that there were several children in the home, and a gun was reportedly held to the head of one child.
"Let's hear it for Davey's Uptown," said Rex Hobart, to a rowdy crowd raising plastic cups of whiskey toward the stage of the midtown dive bar. "What the hell are you guys doing here?"
It was a good question. Despite the fact that Davey's showroom is a bit of a cave, a brief glance at the crowd made it clear that it was difficult to think of another opportunity for this assortment of people to be in one bar. A grizzled guy and his wife clapped and swing-danced near an amp; a bespectacled hipster couple in plaid traded whispered jokes; a dude in an embroidered cowboy hat clinked glasses with a guy in a button-up shirt and a fleece vest. But that's the power of the Hearts of Darkness and Rex Hobart and the Misery Boys, who teamed up for one night of powerhouse live local music in Kansas City on Saturday night.
It's a good time to be in the market for local produce, eggs and meat. A number of area community-supported agriculture programs are now taking deposits for the upcoming season. With a CSA, you pay a fee for a portion of the harvest on a given farm or collective of farms. Some require members to work a few hours on the farm or even pick the produce themselves, but many are simply subscription services that have a weekly pickup or delivery of goods.
