Florence and the Machine, and five other concert announcements we're hoping for

Florence, of Florence and the Machine
  • Florence, of Florence and the Machine

'Tis the season of concert announcements. You'll notice that Kansas City has some pretty hefty names headed our way this summer, such as Janelle Monae and Arcade Fire. Other notable incomers: Bright Eyes, Sleigh Bells, Phosphorescent, the Black Lips, DeVotchKa, and more. Here are a couple of tours that we wish would stop and rock KC. Hey, we can dream, can't we?

Florence and the Machine

You've spotted Florence's flaming red hair at the Grammys and the Oscars this year, and you've heard "Dog Days Are Over" on 96.5 the Buzz 99 million times already. Florence and the Machine is definitely on Kansas City's radar and could probably sell out the Uptown in the drop of a hat. The woman with the lungs is already lending her lovely pipes to lots of festivals across the country this summer. This one's probably the most realistic to hope for.

Erykah Badu
Badu teased us early last year with a show announcement at the Midland with Janelle Monae. (Certainly beats the shit out of Bruno Mars for a co-headliner, doesn't it?) She subsequently canceled, only to move to bigger markets. Ouch. We wish that the Queen of Neo-Soul would bring her sultry weirdness back our way. She's playing Coachella -- and besides, she owes us one.

Rihanna

We'll settle for this big-time pop singer now that our dreams of hosting Robyn on Katy Perry's date at the Sprint Center were so cruelly dashed. Besides, Rihanna is touring with Cee-Lo Green, who would promise some pretty irresistible arena-wide sing-alongs. RiRi could pack the Sprint Center, and she'd offer some mind-boggling eye candy -- I'm talking stage sets here, pervs -- and a slew of radio earworms. She already has announced a date in Illinois, and there's a two-week gap between her date in Texas and her next date in New York. We're not that far away, right?

Adele
The 22 year-old British crooner is all over the news right now after the release of her latest album, 21. Her voice gives listeners the same hair-raising chill that many legendary talents have. This would be one for the ages.

Eminem

This one's a pretty big what-if. Em is playing gigantic festival dates, but hoping for the rapper to announce a date in Kansas City is almost too much to ask -- almost. In fact, you know what would be even more awesome? If he announced a double-headlining act with -- gasp -- Lil' Wayne. (Maybe Weezy can even bring Nicki Minaj along, like he did on his stop at Starlight two years ago.) My fingers are crossed.

Jeff Mangum*

*Note: I am 99.9 percent sure that this show will not happen. (But maybe it will?)

Jeff Mangum, who Stereogum recently called "indie rock's white whale," is the reclusive frontman of Neutral Milk Hotel, which produced one of the most heralded albums (well, by record-store geeks, I guess) of the late '90s, In An Aeroplane Over the Sea. In an announcement that made audiophiles all over the country go wee, Mangum announced that he'd be playing acoustic versions of Neutral Milk Hotel songs over several dates in New York and New Jersey and various other places that aren't here. But it sure would be nice.

I'd love to see The Black Keys come back to KC again, they are touring with Cage The Elephant this summer, but as of now the closest they are coming to KC is Council Bluffs, IA.

Kansas City has the worst music scene for a city of its size. Lawrence routinely has a better line up of shows for indie rock fans. Grinders/Crossroads does its best but that's only a few months out of the year.

A plea to Record Bar. When you have 3 bands playing on a weeknight please don't have the "headliner" start at 12:30. Half of the crowd is gone by then.

Well, Monae has had a tenuous relationship with KC in the past. (She usually claims Atlanta as her hometown.) It is nice to see her showing some KC pride.

Not really surprising that Janelle Monae would come to KC, is it? :)
