It's not a new concept to the theater crowd of Kansas City: last year Katie Gilchrist hosted a weekly unwind session every Thursday at One80 that included friends getting together, jamming through some cover songs, catching up on the week, and throwing back some cocktails. However, when her partner at the time, MFA student Nick Gehlfuss, moved to New York and One80 changed its concept to Beer Kitchen, the weekly chill session fizzled out. Luckily, with the help of friend and veteran local rocker Vi Tran, as well as Sean Hogge and Madison DeCamp on the violin, Gilchrist has revived the weekly affair, and it's now taking place every Wednesday at Czar Bar.
You may have seen Gilchrist most recently as part of the Vi Tran Band, as an integral part of both the Sonic Spectrum Tribute Series' David Bowie and Pretenders affairs, or at the dynamite Exile on Main Street tribute. She plans to use the Wednesday jam as a way for friends to play through some of their favorites. (This includes Bob Dylan and the Stones as well as White Stripes, MGMT, Florence & the Machine, and even a few guilty pleasures like Lady Gaga hits.) Friends often hop onstage to join in on certain songs, and occasionally some local songs make their way into the repertoire. But one thing is certain: There's little that "Lady Katie" (as friend Vi Tran refers to her) can't absolutely slay on the mic.
The weekly Wednesday Jam starts at 10 p.m. at Czar Bar and features no cover charge plus some killer cheap-drink specials. It's a late-night, post-rehearsal, post-gig friendly affair that was built for the performance elite and fans to chill out. What more could hardworking musicians ask for?
