Talib Kweli and Billy Dee Williams are about to have beef, yo. According to the rapper's Twitter feed (@RealTalibKweli) he didn't approve of Colt 45 Blast's sponsorship of his upcoming show at The Granada in Lawrence.

Kweli didn't elaborate on his reasons for cutting off Colt Blast, the brand's new, Snoop-approved, juice-flavored drank (with 12 percent alcohol!). I assumed that it had to do with Colt 45's tradition of targeting booze ads to a black audience, drawing criticism for well over 20 years.

I took an informal poll of local rappers via e-mail, just to be sure I wasn't getting this idea from Crazytown, and got several other theories.

Les Izmore
wrote back, "I'm not sure. He may prefer another brand of alcohol."

Louiz Rip replied, "I'm sure it has to do with the fact that it's an all-ages show and he doesn't want it to look like he promotes underage drinking."

Hmmmm.

Apparently, Kweli didn't know about the sponsorship until he was

informed by Paul

Porter, of Industry Ears ("A

New Generation Think Tank Dedicated to Promoting Justice in Media"),

whose blog is in dire

need of an editor. Dude. Srsly.

I know Talib's lyrics stick to ya rib and all, but he snaps

his fingers and boom, there goes a paid sponsor? I called The Granada to find out for sure. The guy who answered sounded a little taxed, telling me, "We're

dealing with it right now." I asked why he thought Kweli disapproved of

the brand, and he said, "I'm not real sure." Then I asked to whom I was

speaking, and got only, "Thanks ..." and a dial tone.

The show is still on for now. Will update if anything changes.
