UPDATE: Wednesday, April 20, 9:56 a.m.: We've just received a press release from the festival, and here are some more details. We'll give you more as we get 'em:
This summer, Kanrocksas Music Festival will hit the Midwest and overtake the Kansas City area as one of the top music festivals in the nation with major headliners, multiple stages and a projected attendance of 100,000. This major music festival will offer unrivaled value by combining free parking, free camping and no service charges. Increasing the overall value is an unrivaled musical lineup, fan-friendly activities, and a significant emphasis on Earth-friendly initiatives and charitable causes, creating a unique, social experience.Something big is coming down the pipes this summer, and it's called Kanrocksas. We've promised to keep some juicy details under wraps for a little while yet, but trust us: This one's gonna be good.
There's more information at Kanrocksas' social media sites: Twitter, Facebook and its own website. The festival will announce various acts every day leading up to the press conference.

Looks like the Black Keys are in fact on the Kanrocksas bill....
Doesn't help the name any, though...
At first I thought it was a bad festival name. But I think we're overthinking it. All it means is "rock" in the middle of Kansas.
Someone grew a pair and put together a festival at the Speedway? Plenty of parking and camping area. As far as Lolla...not every band on the planet will be there. A ton of artists playing Coachella...VooDoo Fest...Bonnaroo etc. that will not be on the Lolla Lineup and worthy of some exposure. Probably would have been better on another date but it is what it is....now who is playing haha
How about being all inclusive and call it the KANMIZZOKNEBARKOROCK Festival?? Im just trying to be constructive instead of being just "another internet asshole"
Ahh I have heard of this forbidden land you call KCK---It is still a dangerous uncharted territory!!!
You are absolutely right. I can see how you and many other people could perceive me as being a homophobe by my immature description of this festival name. I apologize to anyone insulted on this page. ---I would like to officially retract my "gay ass name" description of this festival name and replace it with "fucking moronic". Thank you
Exactly! Kansas City area is the whole metro area on both sides of the state line. LK must have just moved here.
q - What's even worse than the name "Kanrocksas"?
a - Describing it as a "Gay Ass Name"
If you're going to be another asshole on the internet making fun of something, at least be clever about it. And don't be such a fucking homophobe.
Often in the Festival business, total attendance is a combination of attendance for each day. Therefore, 100,000 could mean 50,000 each day.
That's still a lot, but it seems doable.
I'm sure it won't be too Rockfest for two reasons -
- If someone wanted to created another Rockfest, they wouldn't do it in a city that already has a Rockfest (especially since that's KC's biggest festival by far.)
- Just look at that logo. Look at it. It is not Rockfest.
I don't think this will quite be a Pitchfork, though. I've got my money on Foo Fighters as a headliner.
They haven't announced anything yet. I agree, Chicago would be the obvious choice. But now I doubt it (PJ20) would be held at the same time in the same city as LollaP.
Didn't they already announce a Chicago date for the PJ thing? I think that's likely THE midwestern stop for them, considering Eddie's Chicago connections.
I agree with Abe. I doubt that it'll be a Rockfest type thing. And remember that there is a rule for bands that play Lollapalooza that they can't play within 300 miles leading up to and following Lolla. With the name, Kanrocksas, I too believe that it is Wakarusa related.
I'm pullin' for PJ20. (the Pearl Jam fest. The band said they were looking for a spot in the midwest. When they played Sprint Center, Eddie said he though KC was really beautiful). Hope it's not a letdown, and that it doesn't cost a lot.
While I too am hesitant to think this will be a great fest, I can't say it is going to be Rockfest part 2. First off this quote "significant emphasis on Earth-friendly initiatives and charitable causes, creating a unique, social experience." doesn't sound very Rockfest-y to me. Second, lots of bands have played KC in the days leading up or after their Lollapalooza sets in years past, bands could play friday here and saturday in chicago and vice versa, and since this is a two day fest, any band playing Lolla on Sunday could play KC. If anything this seems like a Wakarusa replacement.
Of course it's all wait and see, but who knows?
Haven't heard - don't care. That deal a couple of years back where the pigs stopped people getting off the freeway and searched them for drugs put an end to any desire I might have to attend festivals or concerts in Kansas.
I'd think "Kansas City Area" would include KCK and all the suburbs of KC as well. Obviously by the name it's gonna be on the Kansas side of things. I looked up who owns the Kanrocksas.com URL as well (because I'm a nerd) and it's owned by New West Presentations who run Sandstone. I really, really hope it's not happening in Bonner Springs.
I actually think it sounds more promising for the lineup that this is the same weekend as Lollapalooza. For touring reasons, it would make a lot of sense for Lolla artists to stop in KC on their way to and from Chicago. That's pretty common.
Geez i thought Rocklahoma (Oklahoma's rock festival) was a gay ass name---i was wrong!! Did some guy in a trailer think up this name??
yeah, that number is higher than the tickets sold for Lollapalooza and they bring in 100+ national acts. That number might be a little optimistic.
I went from extreme excitement to cynical dreamer in about 10 seconds after reading these comments.
I should have known something was up when I read the title Kanrocksas. I really hope I'm wrong on this one.
But hey, they're announcing their lineup a day BEFORE Lollapalooza!
Being on the same weekend as Lollapalooza does lend credence to Matt's theory that it will be more Seether than Black Keys.
But hey - who doesn't want to sit outside for two August days in Kansas? The Bleeding Kansas festival 5 years ago proved that heat stroke and music go hand in hand.
From the horrible festival name, I'm a bit worried this will be more Rockfest than Pitchfork fest in terms of bands...I hope I'm wrong. This date is three weeks after Pitchfork though so I doubt many of those bands will be coming to KC if that's what you are insinuating.
