Hunx and His Punx stomp through RecordBar tonight

The Oakland, California, garage-pop outfit Hunx and His Punx stopped through Lawrence for Scion's Garage Fest last fall. While washing my hands in the crowded men's room at Liberty Hall, Seth "Hunx" Bogart approached the sink next to me and muttered under his breath, "Ugh, there's way too many straight people in this town." To call Hunx flamboyantly gay would be strictly factual. That day, he did an interview in a bodysuit of multicolored balloons, before he and his all-girl band took The Granada's stage for a set of songs about man love, lost and won.

Hunx's voice sneers like a nasal Joey Ramone in tandem with his band's doo-wop harmonies. Sonically, the group's lo-fi guitar work and just-keep-the-time drumming combine classic elements of girl-group chants and surf-rock riffs, wrapped together in three-minute bursts.

Hunx and His Punx, Shannon and the Clams and Cuntaloupe. Thursday, May 5, at the RecordBar.
