Lawrence's garage-punkers Mouthbreathers have been receiving scads of press for their Bandcamp demo. Impose Magazine and Washington City Paper called "Anxiety" a "no bullshit bruiser" and "a fuzz-filled jam," respectively. They've opened for nearly every garage show to come through in the past few months -- the Reigning Sound and the Fresh and Onlys, to name a couple -- and recently signed with a label to make their first official release (having already self-released a six-song cassette demo). They've playing tonight at the Jackpot in Lawrence with the Vivian Girls and No Joy. Drummer Zach Campbell (frontman of Lawrence's other garage phenom, Rooftop Vigilantes), spoke with us via e-mail about the band's future plans.
The Pitch: The new album is due out when? This summer? What's the title?
Zach Campbell: Well, it's a 7-inch, actually, and it's coming out on In the Red Records. It's coming out this summer. It's only two songs: "Anxiety" and "The Creeper." We are going to be working on a full-length this summer, though, and touring in August and October. Hoping to have the full length done by fall.
How'd you end up signing with In the Red? Did it come about after you played with Kid Congo back in February, or were you actively searching for a label to put it out?
It started when we played with the Reigning Sound. Greg Cartwright [frontman for the Reigning Sound] told them about us, and we were looking around for labels, blogs, etc. Greg actually forgot to give them our EP, ha ha. So, I randomly shot them an e-mail about it. Found that out, sent them one, and we went from there. Luckily for us, Larry (the guy who runs it) liked it. So, now we're going out on the road in August and October to support it and keep recording for a full length. It's exciting.
Where'd you record the songs?
We recorded at the Harveyville project in Harveyville, Kansas, with Ron Miller and Adam Hess of Up the Academy/Kid Congo.
Where are you heading on your tour? I heard there's the possibility you might be taking some other locals out with you.
No, tour will just be us. It will be difficult enough to afford even that. As far as the tours go, we are headed west first, starting with the Northwest. Then, down the coastline, then headed back through Arizona and Texas. Then, in October, kind of mimicking that loop on the East Coast. We will be going out to CMJ.
