We wrote about hip-hop/party collective Team Bear Club this past fall. They're generally a Lawrence-centric crew, but starting this Saturday, they're broadening their horizons to Kansas City. Westport, specifically, where once a month they'll be throwing a Bear Club party at the Union. We caught up with head dude Phil Canty (also known as Morri$) to chat about what to expect.
Why the Union?
I actually haven't even been there yet. We'd just heard from our KC folks that it was a cool spot. It sounds like a place we'd hang out here in Lawrence, this dark basement type of thing. Don't they do, like, a Smiths Night there, where they play all Smiths songs?
Yeah.
Yeah, that just seems very cool to me. Except with Bear Club, we would probably want to do a deal where they play all Gucci Mane tracks all night.
So what can we expect on Saturday?
It's going to be kind of an indoor/outdoor thing. Brent Tactic is going to be spinning outside on the patio, and then me and Tom Richman will be playing songs inside. Plus Greg Enemy is going to do some songs, and Dutch Newman will host the night.
What does a host do on a night like this?
We just like to have a guy on the mic throughout the night -- it's kind of a Team Bear Club thing, I guess. He'll just be calling out names and shit, keeping things lively. Just to keep the momentum going.
Plans for future parties?
Eh, we want to keep that kind of top-secret. It takes the fun out of it if everybody already knows what's going to happen.
Team Bear Club, this Saturday, May 28, at the Union (421 Westport Road). Free.
