Kansans, your state has one of the "craziest gun laws" in the nation. The Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence bestowed the dubious honor on the Sunflower State "for allowing guns in K-12 schools," the Wichita Eagle reported.
If that sounds crazy, well, it's possible. Chuck Sexson, the director of the
concealed-carry program for the Kansas
Attorney General's Office, acknowledged that "it's possible" some school
districts could choose to allow concealed-carry weapons in schools
(although he didn't know of any that did). He said the decision to post
signs on school buildings is up to local school boards.
Soft drinks are like concessions for restaurants because our addiction to a bit of colored corn syrup can help an establishment's struggling profit margins. But the line between gouging and gorging is a fine one.
Serious Eats recently stumbled into a $5 bottle of Mexican Coca-Cola at David Chang's Duck Lunch in New York City. (Last week, chef Alex Pope talked about the morning he spent at Chang's Momofuku.) That's $5 for a bottle that you carry from the counter to your table. Stadiums, bars and airports are exempt from the discussion, but what's the most that a restaurant should charge for a Coke?
Heads up, downtown Kansas City employers. Your workers are probably going to be late today. The streets were total gridlock around 8 a.m., making a usual five-minute drive from my lair at 11th and Broadway a nearly 20-minute drive. The photo above doesn't do justice to how bad it was. Nevertheless, we're back for this short week.
A Kansas City marketing company has moved four blocks, and the city will become a little poorer as a result.
Global Prairie has changed addresses in the Crossroads District. The company recently left its location at 1619 Walnut for the Vitagraph Film Exchange Building, at 17th Street and Wyandotte. Though its zip code remains the same, half of Global Prairie's workforce will fall off the city's tax rolls because of an agreement with philanthropist Shirley Helzberg, who restored the Vitagraph Building.
UPDATE (3:23 p.m.): Brian Washington, 19, was the victim of this morning's homicide. Police are still looking for Washington's killer.
Original Story: Kansas City police are looking for whomever was in a white Ford Taurus that opened fire on three men, killing one early this morning.
Witnesses saw three men walking in the street in the 11200 block of Corrington around 1:50 a.m. when the drive-by shooting occurred. One of the men was rushed to a hospital in a private vehicle but was pronounced dead.
Three teens playing with a handgun ended with a 16-year-old boy dead Sunday afternoon.
Marlin Garrett, his twin brother and a 14-year-old suspect were playing with a handgun when Garrett was accidentally shot by the 14-year-old boy inside a home in the 8500 block of East 92nd Place around 1:30 p.m. Garrett died at the scene.
Chef Alex Pope -- who was the featured chef in a series of interviews on Fat City last week -- has announced that he's officially leaving his
post at the R Bar on Saturday, June 4.
Pope's departure ends a nearly two-year tenure at the saloon,
restaurant and music venue in the West Bottoms. Pope says owner Joy Jacobs
wants to focus more on the music component of R Bar and plans to serve more
casual dishes. "She wants a less fancy menu," Pope says.
Former Miss USA and porn star Kelli McCarty is donating her winning dress to the tornado relief effort in Joplin, Missouri, according to TMZ. The gown is on eBay with a starting bid of $5,000 (no one has bid on it yet), and all of the proceeds go to the Salvation Army in Joplin.
McCarty won the 1991 Miss USA pageant -- and Liberal, Kansas' favorite daughter has since starred on the canceled soap Passions and in a porno called Faithless (here's my review). "If I can help someone rebuild their house, then it's worth it," McCarty
told TMZ.
