The Union in Westport keeps throwing salacious dance parties. On Saturday, Charlotte, NC's Heartbreak and a handful of KC artists will be in the house (9 p.m., free). Here's what DJ Brent Tactic had to say about the show.
The Pitch: Can you tell us a bit about the show and who's going to be there?
Weather permitting, we'll have DJs going on all night both inside and
on the patio. It's not everyone playing bass-driven electronic music
in Kansas City by any means, but it's definitely a strong representation, I
think. You'll hear everything from dubstep to two-step to hip-hop to
glitch hop to drumstep to U.K. funky to whatever, really. Primary showcase
for this specific party, though, is to put the worldwide burgeoning genre
of moombahton on center stage at prime time. My camp, Think 2wice
Records, and Lotus Camp headed by the EZ Brothers, aka Flashdance Gordon
and Nmezee, came together to make the party happen, and everyone we
brought onboard for support are good friends of ours that we think are
extremely talented in their crafts, aka ... I'm thinking the music is
going to be NUTS in both areas all night, and this may be something people
talk about afterwards for a minute.
Talk about moombahton.
I've actually been playing moombahton pretty
regularly around KC for a little over a year now (as has Steez Harvey,
aka KC DJ great Shaun Duval). I've gotten so into it that I'm now
networking with a lot of the other DJs and producers I really respect in
the worldwide scene, and I've been lucky enough to obtain a lot of
mutual respect for my work in pushing things here. There's basically
the big three moombahtonistas at this point (Dave Nada ... the creator of the
genre, Munchi and Heartbreak) who are credited as being the ones who
really gave this movement legs to grow in the beginning. Heartbreak hit
me up recently on Twitter about coming to the Midwest. I've wanted to
bring in a heavy hitter to show KC how this can really be done big. It
all just really worked out well, and he's even playing in Omaha at Gunk
on Sunday.
Along with some extra sound, lights and visuals on Saturday, one of
the things I wanted to tie in was how this movement took to the masses
on the Internet. Almost everything I've come across being created
musically in the genre (original tune or edit) so far has been given
away for free. Thanks to the good folks at Union, I was able to make
this a free event and hopefully make every electronic music fan in KC
(and surrounding areas for that matter) put this event on their own
personal calendars. There is a lot of talk about this genre right now,
and I honestly feel like it's my duty to show this city how truly
powerful and amazing it can be.
