At the dawn of this long, hot summer, Philipp Vitti, the operations manager at Gusto Lounge (38th and Broadway), sent out an extraordinarily verbose press release informing the public that the bar was getting a face-lift. Things would be different at the new Gusto. No more tweakers buzzing around the bar. No more crackheads passing out in the corners upstairs.

Some progress was made. The upstairs was cleaned up in recent months and converted into a pseudo-members-only club called the Ledger. Downstairs, a charming little late-night crepes shop opened up. But it was still pretty nasty in there, and on the streets outside the bar, the situation has remained shady and violent. There was a fatal shooting at Chubby's in July, and last weekend, the door guy at Fitz's Blarney Stone got stabbed in the eye. Not an ideal setting for selling croque madames and specialty cocktails.

Yesterday, Gusto announced via a Facebook note that it is closing -- that it is, in fact, already closed. Here's the note:

"The Gusto Lounge and The Ledger could not negotiate successfully new lease agreements with the new owners and landlords of the building. It has been a great 2 years with everybody here at The Gusto Lounge, and a wild 2 months at @the ledger, TO CELEBRATE : TONIGHT & TOMORROW ***AT **** The Emerald Space : GOING AWAY GUSTO! Celebrate BERLIN.¸¸.•*`˜°ºâ~¼ ZWEI tonight and FRIDAY-->, Craig's bon voyage at Louder than Bombs. REGULAR GUSTO EVENTS will be scheduled @the emerald temporarily. The Ledger and Broadway Crepes at Gusto Lounge will be re-locating and fully operational within the coming weeks in it's new more hospitable location while plans for The Gusto continue to be negotiated."

Best of luck to the Ledger and Broadway Crepes, both of which were worthy endeavors. Hopefully they'll rise from the ashes in a less seedy venue.
