115 W. 18th St. — formerly known as the Arts Incubator, and originally known as the Bauer — is opening new galleries, offices, retail spaces, studios and a woodshop. It’s been a void on 18th Street since the Arts Incubator closed in July, after a sudden storm of difficulties caused the board to disband. The Bauer has a simpler business model.
Bob Ehinger, longtime owner of the property, asked Jeff Owens, who was renting space and carpentering at the Incubator, to reset the property with him and resurrect the good old Bauer.
"There are two independent art galleries, micro retail and office space, and 16-20 studios. Artists still have the option to rent large 600 square foot studios, all with windows looking out into the crossroads, and they also have the option to rent smaller spaces," said Lindsay Deifik, a sort of programs manager assisting Owens.
Deifik was a print shop volunteer whom Jeff asked to assist in the process. She put up an official Facebook for the Bauer yesterday. “I want to raise awareness that we’re offering the galleries, studios, and retail spaces, the same kinds of things, but with a simple leaser/lessee relationship.”
Chic white drywall is being put up throughout. "It’s going to be cleaner infrastructure with larger studio space,” says Deifik.
She’s still really sad about the print shop closing, but they’re excited to fill the space. Habitat is coming in today to knock walls down.
