Nick Carroll on the future of the Jackpot

While interviewing Replay Lounge owner Nick Carroll regarding the upcoming Cheap Beer compilation LP, the erstwhile Jackpot Music Hall proprietor was kind enough to clear up some confusion regarding the venue's upcoming sale to Eric and Darla Bergman:
"The Jackpot — they're going to continue to have shows. I think there was maybe some misinformation, but what they want to do is kind of expand on what's there and make it to where there's more to do during the day. It's a lot of ideas that we had, and wanted to do, too, but they were in a better position to do it. They've also got a lot of experience. They've got as much or more experience as me, and the kind of bars that they've run have been more like the Jackpot, and I've run places like the Replay. They've done things like pool tables and dartboards, and they just have a very good feel. I think it's really going to be successful, to be honest with you."

Read more about Carroll's decision to sell below.

"Maybe it won't be just a dedicated venue, but the place kind of needed more than that. It needed to have more regulars, and everybody that works there and everybody that went there knows it. We just needed to have something to where, if a show canceled Friday night, we're still gonna bring some money in because there's still some other things to do. As it sits right now, if something cancels Friday night, you can hear the crickets, and that's not good.

That's just the place we were: an awesome place, with awesome bartenders, but not that much to do, and that was kind of always the issue."

Why not use the space the bar has and do something different, the bar is long, maybe a bowling lane or curling lane, sure the ice would be an issue and its a little short but at least it would have something different to offer than all other bars in Lawrence. Bowling would be easy, bet you could get two short lanes in there. If nothing else at least ski-ball, everyone loves ski-ball and get one of those goffer games where you smash it with a hammer. Just be different, thats all you really need to be these days.

Nick,

Just so we're clear: You are upset because you did an interview, on the record, and were quoted verbatim by the reporter in the article that followed? And you want us to delete this blog post and replace it with one where you don't say all the stuff you said in this post?

Sorry dude.

Nick I am really disappointed about this blog. If you want to know the future of the business talk to the new owners. They are great people and they can explain everything in their own words. Agreeing to take this interview with you was a mistake, I was in an elevator surrounded by people so I didn’t have complete focus during the interview. If I knew you were going to reprint everything I said verbatim (even if it made no sense), I would have not agreed for the interview because I was not prepared for it. I made a request for the Pitch to delete this blog and replace it with a better written one with the future owners. By doing this the new owners will be happier, I will be happier and you won’t look like such a jerk. I have never understood why reporters quote people verbatim when there is an obvious distraction or problem. The worse part of it is all of the Jackpot people are going through a transition, due to the new ownership, and when I read this explanation:
“That's just the place we were: an awesome place, with awesome bartenders, but not that much to do, and that was kind of always the issue."
I literally almost threw up. Jackpot and the people that have worked there for the last eight years have meant the world to me and that comment is just not fitting. So Jackpot thank you for working hard and caring. Eric and Darla thanks for putting up with me, and Nick, you’re not a bad guy and you probably caught me at a bad time – but no more interviews.
