Moaning Lisa played its last show in Kansas City (at the then Hurricane, now Riot Room) seven years ago. The band relocated to Los Angeles in 2004 and soon became the Culture Killers. But Moaning Lisa is back in KC for a couple of shows this month.
We recently spoke with David George of Moaning Lisa and found out what sparked the reunion, if the members have any future shows planned, and what’s going on with Culture Killers.
The Pitch: What sparked the idea for the reunion show?
George: This all came about because I've been sedentary for too long behind the acoustic guitar! We performed a few songs for our late drummer Johnny Giosa's memorial concert in Los Angeles this past October and had such an amazing time playing that we thought we HAVE to do it again. Johnny was the last drummer before we became Culture Killers. He was killed this past August in a car wreck in L.A. It didn't take much persuasion to get the guys to come back to KC (everyone's families are still here). Moaning Lisa's last show was in 2006 at the now-closed Beverly Hills Hard Rock Café.
What will the evening’s set list look like? All Moaning Lisa, or some Culture Killers, too?
We will be playing as many songs as we can remember! A mixture of the first and second Moaning Lisa records. We are also playing songs from the Culture Killers' EP that was basically the ML EP that was never released … or hardly released.
Any plans on making this a yearly reunion?
There are no plans for future Moaning Lisa reunions. It seems KC gets a little overwhelmed with a lot of them (other former KC bands). It only shows that there were some amazing bands from Kansas City back in the day!
What are Culture Killers' plans for later this year and next?
Culture Killers currently has a video of two remakes (“Born to be Wild” and “Magic Carpet Ride”) on the Freemont Street Experience. There are plans to record another EP or full length sometime next year. In the meantime, I'm getting ready to start recording my second solo record.
