A Kansas City pizza maker proved that she's fast, just not quite the fastest in the nation. Beatriz Segundo came in second in the second annual CiCi's Pizza Throwdown — a national timed competition of CiCi's employees that took place last Tuesday, January 17, in Frisco, Texas.

Let's be honest. Any place with cold beer and a bar stool can be the best beer bar in America on a given night. But Draft Magazine has attempted to suss out those bars that are serving up proper suds every night. The result is their list of 'America's 100 Best Beer Bars,' which includes the Foundry from Kansas City for the second year in a row.

Gabrielle Hamilton hauls her Blood, Bones and Butter to Jasper’s

Gabrielle Hamilton is elevating our discourse on food.

  • Gabrielle Hamilton is elevating our discourse on food.
In January, local conversation about food devolved into hurling parsnips at one another on Facebook over whether KC is fit for vegetarians. So it’s a relief that February begins with an appearance by Gabrielle Hamilton. The New York chef owns the restaurant Prune and has an MFA in fiction writing from the University of Michigan. That combination means that her powerful 2011 memoir, Blood, Bones & Butter, evokes her parents’ food-intensive parties with enough visceral force to make a hardcore vegan suck the marrow out of a lamb shank.

Her book is now out in paperback, and at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, February 1, she makes a tour stop at Jasper’s Restaurant (1201 West 103rd Street, 816-941-6600). A $50 ticket to the Rainy Day Books event includes a four-course dinner made by chef Jasper Mirabile Jr. and modeled on Hamilton’s recipes. Specifically: minestrone with grilled-cheese sandwiches, “Mother-in-Law’s Eggplant Parmigiano Casserole,” Prune’s chicken thighs and braised fennel, and mascarpone ice cream with salted-caramel croutons. Hamilton spoke with The Pitch recently by phone.

Q&A: Comedian Dov Davidoff, at Stanford and Sons through Saturday

Dov Davidoff looks to keep them laughing at Stanford and Sons.

The common perception of stand-up comedians as damaged weirdos who use humor as a coping mechanism seems to be true more often than not, and no exception is necessary in the case of Dov Davidoff, who was raised in a junkyard. No, really, we asked — it was the family business. Add some exposure to a cult and some New Jersey gruffness and, boom, funny person! In addition to stand-up, Davidoff has appeared in Invincible with Mark Wahlberg as well as a variety of TV shows. The Pitch caught up with him in advance of his four-night run at Stanford and Sons, which starts tonight. Tickets cost $12-$35, depending on night and proximity to stage.

Should some foods be immune from the healthy movement?

Are you buying the idea of a healthier doughnut?

  • Are you buying the idea of a healthier doughnut?
The life food of one Homer J. Simpson will likely never make a list of the healthiest breakfast options. But LaMar's Donuts is attempting to rehabilitate the baked circle's rounder image with whole-grain glazed cake and whole-grain raised doughnuts.

"This will be the first phase of a wave of several healthier options to be offered in the future," said Kayde Pierce, spokesperson for LaMar’s, in a release about the new doughnuts that went on sale last week.

Are you buying into the idea of a whole-grain doughnut, or are some foods simply beyond a healthy makeover?

New bluegrass and roots bands form and fall apart frequently in these parts. Breaking apart from the pack of banjo-totin’ musicians is tough. How does local roots act Ashes to Immortality try to stand out from the rest?

Name: Sara Hooser

Occupation: Store manager at Altar Bridal and designer of my new collection of wedding gowns called “Ila Bean Bridal”

Hometown: Overland Park

Current neighborhood: Downtown Overland Park

Who or what is your sidekick? My younger sister, Emily, and my English bulldog, Lucy. Emily lives in Stillwater, Oklahoma, which is my home away from home, so Lucy is my stand-in. If I could take her everywhere with me, I would! When I get ready to leave for work, she is sitting there by the front door wishing to come with me.

What career would you choose in an alternate reality? Dog groomer. As much as I love bridal and designing wedding gowns, I would love to chill with my pup and other canines all day.
