The Lawrence Public Library recently met its fundraising goal of $1 million in capital to "enhance four critical areas of the new library: a larger Children's Room, the Young Adult Center, Technology, and Outdoor Spaces." As part of a community celebration this past Sunday, they announced another fundraising event. On Tuesday, March 13, NPR special correspondent Susan Stamberg will give a talk at the Lied Center, entitled "Libraries, Cranberries and New Stories."

Stamberg has a history with another bit of Lawrence. Back in the fall of 1973, NPR's All Things Considered did the first series of broadcasts outside its Washington studios, and they were done from Lawrence's KANU (now Kansas Public Radio). At the end of that week, there were rededication ceremonies for the station, and Stamberg spoke alongside Sen. Bob Dole.

Dole's remarks are available as part of the Robert J. Dole Archive & Special Collections, but Stamberg's remarks were recorded and included as part of The First KANU Radio Album, an incentive LP given out during the station's 1974 fundraising efforts. We present that audio below. It's a trip to hear someone explain what NPR is.

Tickets for Stamberg's talk are on sale now through the Lied Center and cost $25. For $50, you can purchase one of a limited number of VIP tickets that gets you access to a post-talk meet-and-greet.
