The Pitch: What inspired you to begin Third Seven?
Mickelson: Third Seven, as my solo alias, actually got started when I was in high school, but the touring and performing Third Seven has just blossomed in the last two years or so. I wanted to continue touring when other bands I tour with were on downtime. So I dove into touring solo. In the beginning, since I didn’t have much performable material, I performed mainly improvisational for the first couple Third Seven tours (in 2010). In doing so, I really kinda created a style for my solo looping cello ideas. I am always very happy to see Third Seven evolve. I am even touring with a bass player for this tour, which has been quite a lot of fun!
How do audiences typically react to such a minimal setup for a show?
As for audience reception, I think what is really special about Third Seven is the display of emotion. I think people respect confidence of emotion. I am very grateful for the respect of fans and audiences so that I am able to travel even further and continue to share music on and on. That being said, from what I can tell, Third Seven is most always warmly appreciated.
What do you have planned in the near future?
As for my plans after this three-month tour all around the world, I am going to take all of this amazing inspiration from all around the world and start work on the new Third Seven album, as well as work on new albums with other bands that I play with. {A lot} of tour planning as well. I am trying to get on some European festivals and such. 2012 will be a very productive year, I feel. It already has been.
