This weekend's
Planet Comicon was the busiest I've seen it in years. There was a line out the door and all the way into the parking lot until almost noon on Saturday, and parking filled the lot, the garage, and spilled over into the Quintiles lot next door. With both
Billy Dee Williams and
Edward James Olmos doing Q&As early in the day Saturday, the Overland Park Trade Center was full-to-bursting all morning and afternoon. I managed to not totally destroy my bank account - although, judging by the people wheeling out carts full of toys, I was among the minority. Check out a selection of sights from both days of the 'con below.
Did you know that Mr. Williams has a painting in the Jazz Museum at 18th and Vine? True fact.
Mr. Olmos led the audience in a chant of "So say we all!" at the end of his Q&A. You could hear it halfway across the building. Additionally, it was pretty heart-warming to hear several kids mention how much
Stand & Deliver had meant to them.

It was a great time - probably the best PlanetCon I've been to in my years of attendance. Yes, the warm weather and close quarters on Saturday meant that there were a few folks who fell into the "basement dweller" stereotype, but for the most part, people were friendly - jocular, even - and even the vendors seemed to be in a good mood. I'd like to thank the guy from Elite Comics who, upon my questioning what he'd charged me, not only refunded my overpayment, but doubled it. Classy moves like that make for a great weekend.
