New local band Liquor Buddies, featuring Steve Wilson (Mahoots), Matt Erickson (Litigators, Bleach Bloodz), Scott Gribble (Sunday Drive), and Doug Hitchcock (Near Death Experience) have only played one show thus far, and that was two months ago. Nevertheless, the quartet has a song for your ears, and it's a wonderful bit of power pop. If this is what these gents have to offer, I'd like more. And soon. Please. Take a listen to "Free In My Mind" below.

Cleveland's Ringworm is taking a brief jaunt down to Texas for the annual Chaos In Tejas festival in Austin, and Kansas City is lucky enough to get one of the dates on the way. The metallic hardcore sextet plays the Sidecar at the Beaumont this Thursday, May 31, with Everything Went Black, Renouncer, and At Your Throat. If you're coming after the Danzig show at the Uptown, it's only $5 with your ticket stub. Take a listen to the title track to the band's 2001 Victory Records debut, Birth Is Pain, below.

While there have been some wonderful counter-protests to the Westboro Baptist Church - ComiCon, Sundance, and so on - Eric "Mean" Melin and his air guitar crew may have gone the furthest with their showing before Tuesday's Van Halen show at the Sprint Center. I'm not sure I've ever seen someone rock out to Van Halen's "Panama" for a cause other than "rock and roll, man!"

Al Scorch is on tour in support of his quite excellent new record, Tired Ghostly Town, out next week on Plan-It-X South. It's an album that manages to sound life-affirming, despite its rather dirgelike qualities on songs like "The Hearse Driver." You'll have another opportunity to catch him when he stops at Davey's Uptown next week on Wednesday, May 23, to play with Dead Voices and the Grisly Hand. In the meantime, take a listen to "Working Dream" below.

The Replay Lounge's Spring Into Summer show took over 10th Street in Lawrence on Saturday night. With beers in the street, it was a wonderful way to start the summer while simultaneously winding down the school year. We shot video of the Recessionists and Hearts of Darkness - plenty of horns and sweet soul vocals. Check the Recessionists' cover of Lily Allen's "Smile," above, and Hearts of Darkness doing "Numeration," below.

Indiana's New Old Cavalry played the Riot Room last night, and they're in Lawrence at the Bottleneck tonight, May 8, with the Fall Down Drunks. The band's high-octane bluegrass might be just the thing to help work out any lingering hangover you might have from this weekend's drinking. Check out the title track to their Carry Me Out This Way album below.

Last weekend marked the opening of a new venue in Lawrence. The Dog Walk, a park across the street from the renovated Poehler Lofts, looks to be the new place to catch some bluegrass and country. Drakkar Sauna, Prairie Fire and Truckstop Honeymoon inaugurated the lot, playing from a flatbed stage Saturday afternoon. While checking it out, we snagged some video of Truckstop doing "Accidentally," from their album Homemade Haircut. We also snagged several pints of Free State. Enjoy.

Is it wrong to describe the new video for Ghosty's "This Wolf" as simply lovely? Such prettiness is to be expected from the trio, but this Jon Allen-directed bit of animation really takes the cake. The song is from the band's third self-titled album, which is out now.

The latest video from the Sexy Accident went viral this weekend, if my Facebook feed is to be counted as a legitmate sampling of the KC and Lawrence music scene. The Zac Eubank-directed clip for "What We'd Do" (off Ninja Ninja Fight Darth Vader) is a bit of naughtiness that left us in need of a cold shower. The Sexy Accident has never had a more accurate name.

Portland's Greylag has been getting a lot of comparisons to fellow Pacific Northwest denizens like Fleet Foxes, and it's easy to see why. High, lonesome vocals combine with acoustic strumming and a stomping rhythm, taking as much from British folk as it does from American indie rock. The band plays the Granada Wednesday, May 2, opening for Augustana. Take a listen to "Black Crow," off Greylag's debut EP, The Only Way to Kill You, which came out Tuesday on Ninth Street Opus Records (home to recently revived Lawrence folk-rock act the Roseline).
