If ever there was a list that we should be glad to be outside of the top 10, perhaps it's the Men's Health 2011 rankings of the drunkest cities in America. Kansas City was named the 36th drunkest city (out of 100 cities ranked), which is a bit like saying we may be a town of drunks. However, we're nowhere near as drunk as St. Louis (sixth on the list).
Fresno, California, earned the dubious honor of being America's drunkest city, which likely won't be replacing the current tourism slogan of "California's year-round playground."
The Riverfront Times' Gut Check in St. Louis has big plans for how St. Louis can ascend the ranks and dethrone Fresno. St. Louis has come in at No. 6 the past two years. While I'm not certain this is a list you want to top, I can't argue with the idea of spiked concretes or a bar at the top of the St. Louis Arch.

LoveGarden Sounds, before it moved downstairs on Mass Street.
Lawrence's beloved crate-digging haven, LoveGarden Sounds, celebrates its 21st anniversary in February, and it's hosting a throw-down of a party. They'll be flying in garage-punk band Reigning Sound for a night of whiskey-slinging fun -- a special event that is sure to sell out at the intimate Jackpot Music Hall. In fact, they're so sure it will sell out that advance tickets cost more than day-of tickets at the door. Reigning Sound will be joined by local acts Suzannah Johannes, Miles Bonny and Approach, and Mouthbreathers to complete an oddly diverse lineup.

Absurdist comedians Tim Heidecker and Eric Wareheim hit the Midland tonight as part of their Tim & Eric Awesome Tour, Great Job, Chrimbus Spectacular 2010. The show includes a performance by their '70s Southern-rock parody band, Pusswhip Banggang. The Pitch recently spoke to an impressively deadpan Heidecker about band dynamics.
The Pitch: So you'll be performing as Pusswhip Banggang, but you're going to be playing songs from the entire Tim and Eric repertoire?
Tim Heidecker: Yes, Pusswhip songs and then some other songs from the TV show.
Will you play the Pusswhip song "Jambalaya"?
Yes, that's actually one of Pusswhip's favorite songs. We love singing about bein' down South, cookin' up some spicy food, gettin' that meat all chopped up.

Hot damn, it seems nary a fortnight passes without a mention of Jack White's Nashville-based label Third Man Records here on the ol' Wayward Blog.
This time, though, there's a local curve to things: Third Man is releasing a two-song, 7" single from Lawrence old-school folk-country outfit Drakkar Sauna. And it's out today!

Rupert Murdoch approves.
Back in August, Wayward reported on local jazz legendBobby Watson's latest, The Gates BBQ Suite, a seven-part composition released in September.
We're not the only ones who've taken note of Watson's activities. Last week, the Wall Street Journal -- you know, the newspaper with the highest circulation in the country -- wrote a fairly extensive piece on Mr. Watson. Check it out.

Brandon Draper.
This past spring, Venice, the hip-hop musical created by Kansas City Repertory Theatre artistic director Eric Rosen and composer Matt Sax, made its world premiere. No less a voice than Time magazine called itthe best musical of the year -- not just in Kansas City, in the whole United States.
Brandon Draper, drummer for local beloved jazz ensemble Organic Proof, sat behind the kit for the Rep shows, and starting this Sunday he'll be drumming at Venice performances in Los Angeles.
