Former Smog dude Bill Callahan is one of the more exciting singer-songwriters in the world. He brought his dark, spirited folk tunes to RecordBar a few years back on his Apocalypse tour. Though his follow-up isn't out yet, he returns to the venue Wednesday, May 8, for a show. (He's also in Columbia, at Mojo's, the night before.) Riding for the feeling, y'all.
A month without Jason Sudeikis and Kansas City starts to get edgy. Well, don't go out and cheat with Dax Shepard just yet. Sudeikis is set to come back to our fair city for Giggle With Gilda - a night with the Second City national touring company. The benefit for Gilda's Club Kansas City is set for Saturday, April 20, at the Midland. The show starts at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are on sale now and range from $45 to $80.
The last time Tate Stevens was in Kansas City, he was auditioning for the second season of X Factor at the Sprint Center. His return will be at a slightly smaller venue, but he won't have to share the stage.
The Missouri native and winner of season two will be back in Kansas City on Sunday, April 21, for a 7 p.m. show at the Midland. His self-titled album hits stores six days later. The first single, "Power of a Love Song," is just starting to get airplay. Tickets, which go on sale Friday at 10 a.m., cost $25 and include a copy of his album.

Rollins not included.
In case you weren't aware, there are two re-formed lineups of Black Flag touring this summer. One is simply calling itself Flag, and its members include former members Keith Morris, Bill Stevenson and Chuck Dukowski, plus Stephen Egerton from the Descendents.
That is not the group that is coming to the Granada in Lawrence on Thursday, June 6. The group that is coming to the Granada has retained the Black Flag name, and it includes founder Greg Ginn on guitar and Ron Reyes on vocals. It's an all-ages show. Tickets go on sale this Friday, March 8.

There's so much that they feel.
The Postal Service released its electro-emo classic, Give Up, 10 years ago (tugs collar, glances around nervously). To commemorate this, the group's only achievement, members Ben Gibbard, Jimmy Tamborello and Jenny Lewis are doing a bunch of dates this spring and summer. On Wednesday, July 31, they'll be at the Midland.
Tickets are on sale at 10 a.m. this Friday. The band also premiered a Funny or Die video today, with fake footage of Postal Service auditions from back in the day. Worth a watch.
Rockfest has chosen who will rock Kansas City, and it's Alice in Chains. The 2013 Rockfest, set for Liberty Memorial on May 11, announced yesterday that the Seattle band (its fifth studio album, The Devil Put Dinosaurs Here, is out this spring) will headline the 15 acts playing on two stages.
Seether, Papa Roach, Sevendust, Volbeast, Device and Young Guns are among the other bands slated to play. The show will once again end with fireworks because, as those who truly rock understand, nothing beats fireworks. Rockfest will allow you to bring in a sealed 24-oz. water bottle (refills will be available), a small digital camera, and up to 10 strands of beads (11 would just be crazy). Pocket knives, sleeping bags, wallet chains and food are verboten. We'll call these the Fred Durst clauses.
Tickets go on sale to Rockaholics (fans of the event organizer 98.9 the Rock) Wednesday at 10 a.m. and the general public Saturday at 10 a.m.

Ain't life grand.
Dank bros rejoice: Long-running Southern jam-band Widespread Panic is returning to Kansas City this summer. The date: Saturday, June 22, at Starlight Theatre. Did you guys ever get into them? I'll burn you some shit, only the choice nugs.
Tickets on sale next Saturday, March 9, at 10 a.m.
Don't sleep on the Kanrocksas Music Festival. The official lineup is out, and tickets are now on sale ($175 for a ticket [$181 if you opt for the three-month layaway] and $25 for a camping spot) for the festival, June 28 and 29, at the Kansas Speedway.
Fun, Tiesto, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, MGMT, Kendrick Lamar, the Avett Brothers, Passion Pit, Pretty Lights, Imagine Dragons, Miguel, Edward Sharp & the Magnetic Zeros, and She & Him are the featured artists. But there are a host of other acts, including Sublime With Rome, Grouplove, the Dropkick Murphys, T-Pain, the Polyphonic Spree, Camera Obscura, Delta Rae, and Beautiful Bodies (a complete list is available here). VIP tickets are also available at $390 a pop. Those grant you access to private viewing areas, the VIP chill lounge, phone-charging stations, a private locker, separate entry and parking area.
Kevin Smith has been to Kansas City, and now his alter ego is set to pay a visit. Smith made headlines a few years back after a spirited back-and-forth with the Phelps' clan before a local showing of his film, Red State, at the Midland.
And on May 17 at 8 p.m., he'll be back at the downtown theater, only as one-half of the blunt-celebrating duo, Jay & Silent Bob. Smith and Jason Mewes take the stage to showcase their latest animated flick, Jay & Silent Bob's Super Groovy Cartoon Movie, and then conduct a podcast question-and-answer session. Tickets officially go on sale tomorrow. You can get access to the presale at 10 a.m. today (click here and enter 'GROOVY').
