Constant Energy Struggles, the hotly anticipated new LP from KC rhyme assassins CES Cru, dropped yesterday on iTunes and in stores that have actual walls, like Best Buy and FYE. It's the first album from the duo since landing at their new home at Tech N9ne's Strange Music label.

Watch two Olassa videos, shot in the Salina Masonic temple

Who knew the Salina Masonic temple was so pretty? Or had such cool old-timey sets in its theater, which can change from vignette to vignette The Sound of Music-style?

Olassa did, apparently, and has released two videos in the past couple of weeks shot in the temple by Scott Jolley Production Services. The first is for "Pretty Flowers" (view here).

Divine Fits (Britt Daniel of Spoon) and some other acts have been added to the Middle of the Map lineup

The Star's music blog Back to Rockville reported/announced today that Middle of the Map has added a second wave of bands to its lineup. The big one is Divine Fits, the new band fronted by Spoon's Britt Daniel that released a weirdly underrated album, A Thing Called Divine Fits, last year. I mean, this jam is kind of undeniable, am I right? Local label showcases were also added to the bill. Read the whole breakdown here.

Also, Pitchfork BNM'd the new Iceage record today, which ought to move a few more tickets.

UPDATE: The Star has taken the post down, and there's no mention of Divine Fits, etc., on the Middle of the Map Fest site. I assume they just want to wait a few days to announce it in Ink or something. If it turns out that Divine Fits is not playing Middle of the Map, I will buy you all a round of Slurpees.

The Middle of the Map lineup has arrived

Middle of the Map Fest, the homegrown KC music festival, enters its third year this spring. It's April 4-6, at venues around Westport. Today we got the lineup, and it's got some pretty awesome names on it.

At the top: Grizzly Bear! Also: Deerhoof, Tennis, Jeff the Brotherhood, the Joy Formidable, the Whigs, and Iceage. Full lineup here.

The Dead Girls' Fade In/Fade Out is out now; shows this weekend in Lawrence and KC

The Dead Girls teased "Never Erased," a track from their new album, Fade In/Fade Out, in early January. Today the power-pop quartet released unto the Internet the full album in all its glory. It's a pay-what-you-want deal. Go here and get a very satisfying Cheap Trick-Replacements fix. The band is playing two shows this weekend. Tonight (Friday), they're at the Replay Lounge, with the Depth and the Whisper. On Saturday, they're at RecordBar with the Casket Lottery and Gentleman Savage.

Heartfelt Anarchy's album release party is tonight at Riot Room

Heartfelt Anarchy is the newish collaboration between Les Izmore (best known as the guy who raps in Hearts of Darkness) and D/Will, a producer and beat maker (and occasional MC) about town. I caught the duo in October at the Riot Room. Izmore stomped around the stage barking out bars; D/Will wore a mask and tapped out beats on one of those MPC machines like AraabMuzik uses. It was pretty cool. The $10 cover to this show includes a copy of Heartfelt Anarchy's debut album, as well as performances from jazz trio Diverse and DJ Soulnice.

Bloodbirds' Psychic Surgery is out online now; show Thursday at the Eighth Street Taproom

Bloodbirds, the local psych-tinged post-punk trio featuring ex-Ad Astra Per Aspera dude Mike Tuley, Brooke Tuley and Anna St. Louis, has a new album out called Psychic Surgery. You can stream it online at their Bandcamp page, where you can also download it for seven bucks. The album will be available as a vinyl LP in April, and if you know you'll want that, you can drop $15 and get the digital files today and the LP once it's available. Holler at bloodbirdskc@gmail.com to do it that way.

Bloodbirds is at the Eighth Street Taproom in Lawrence this Thursday, with Radkey and Ponyboy. In a few weeks, you can see 'em at RecordBar with Ex-Cult and Lazy, on Tuesday, February 12.

The ACBs' new single 'Record Store' is up on MTV Hive

The ACBs' new record, Little Leaves, is out in March via new local label High Dive Records. (Also on High Dive's roster: Ghosty, Shy Boys and Fourth of July.) We've already heard one of the singles, "Ocean." Today, another song from the album trickled out onto MTV Hive. It's called "Record Store," and you'll probably recognize it if you've seen the band live anytime in the past couple of years. It's got falsettos, harmonies and an earworm of a chorus. Dig it! Get down at the Sucka Free Producer's Showcase this weekend

It wasn't long ago that a regular event in town spotlighting local producers would've seemed laughable, but the solid turnout of bodies on the floor at the first Sucka Free Producer's Showcase at RecordBar, in October, proved that there is an audience for strange beats in KC.

Experimental beat producers need to be ever-evolving creatures. With MIDI controllers and such becoming more attainable for novice beat producers in recent years, it was only a matter of time before hip-hop-rooted musicians began straying from the bulk and hassle of turntables. Four such minds will be spotlighted this Saturday night, when local MC and producer Sephiroth hosts the second edition of the Sucka Free Producer's Showcase, also at RecordBar.
