If you passed the Midland this past Saturday evening, you probably glimpsed a bit more taffeta and fishnet than you're used to spying in the Power and Light District. It was 96.5 the Buzz's Afentra's Prom, where decked-out Kansas Citians flocked to watch the Dan Band (of Old School and The Hangover), She Wants Revenge and the Beautiful Bodies.
Who out there was fan of The L Word? (Don't look so guilty. Raise your hand.) Well, last night, the chick you'll recognize as Alice -- left, above -- came to KC's Conspiracy Room with her electro-pop band, Uh Huh Her. Here's a quick shot that we got of two of the women of the band, Camila Grey -- a former member of the lo-fi rock band Mellowdrone and bass and keyboard player for Dr. Dre, Melissa Auf der Maur, Busta Rhymes, and Kelly Osbourne -- and Leisha Hailey, formerly of the Murmurs and Gush (and The L Word's Alice Pieszecki).
When I arrived at Love Garden Sounds at 9 a.m. for Saturday's Record Store Day shenanigans, it was most assuredly neither sunny nor the 70 degrees it would be later. Wind chill knocked the temp down into the 20s, and a stiff breeze was gusting down Mass Street. The line of folks was already 20 to 30 strong, with many in jackets and scarves, and several had bundled themselves in blankets.
Last night the RecordBar hosted what was likely the last in a string of recent local send-off shows for South By Southwest. Brooklyn's Baby Teardrops -- which is fronted by former local indie-rocker Matt Dunnehoo of Doris Henson -- rolled through Kansas City to pick up the Roman Numerals before heading down south for the MidCoast Takeover showcase, and they treated RecordBar to one hell of a night of dancing, racing indie-rock.

Randy Rogers Band went from being a band I'd never heard of at the beginning of the year to one of my favorites. At this point in time, I've seen them live three times and interviewed them twice. Their live show draws a crowd somewhere between farm kids and countrypolitan folks who wouldn't be out of place in the Power & Light District. As per usual, their show at the Granada Friday night had them tearing up the stage.
