"When's the last time a hip-hop holiday album came out?" asks local rapper thePhantom* of visitors to his Bandcamp page. Decent point, although I wouldn't necessarily say hip-hop and Christmas music have a peanut-butter-and-jelly thing going on.
Nevertheless, thePhantom* has answered his own question, released a six-song, Christmas-themed EP that you can purchase for $5 dollars. It's a dancy, bizarro mix of hip-hop and house; the first track is titled "The Fall of Mr. Elf."

Monta at Odds.
We told all y'all about a month ago about local instrumental space cadets Monta at Odds' new album Fuoco Infernale, and how it's being released by Upstairs Recordings, a Vancouver label. You remember.
Well, it's officially out today, and as I mentioned before, it's a very solid album of experimental downtempo tracks. Get it here. The band's also dropped a video for one of the new songs. Why don't you watch it?

Someone Still Lo -- you know.
Springfield, MO indie-pop kings Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsindrop their third album, Let it Sway, today via Polyvinyl. The thing's got hooks for days. Stream it at MBV or, better, download it for a very reasonable $5 at Amie Street, where it's the Deal of the Day.
Band members Phil Dickey and Will Knauer appeared on a Springfield morning news show earlier today to talk about how they raised money for their tour through the website Kickstarter. They also performed "Cardinal Rules." Check it.

Weezer's Hurley
We feel entitled to ask this question, since 96.5 The Buzz brings Weezer here all the freakin' time. Lost was hard enough to figure out on its own, dammit -- why is Weezer making it more confusing?! (In case you weren't an addict, that's Jorge Garcia, also known as "Hurley" on the show, on the cover.)
Here's what Rivers Cuomo said to Spinner: "I was coming up with all kinds of stuff, but ultimately, we went with some random word that doesn't have anything to do with anything. I just loved this photo of Jorge Garcia -- it just had this amazing vibe."

Out today.
While You Were Sleeping, the new, and free, EP/mixtape from local rapper Steddy P and DJ Mahf, is out today. It's got two sides: Side A is the EP, with all original songs; Side B is the mixtape, a mash-up of Steddy songs and popular rap beats. Guests include CES Cru, Prof, Approach, Big Zach (Kanser) and Mathias (Earthworms).

Not a bad day for new music. A few highlights from the mainstream:
It's been a minute since the last Pernice Brothers album, 2006's Live a Little. In the meantime, Joe Pernice wrote a novel, It Feels So Good When I Stop, and recorded a "soundtrack" album of covers -- bringing his dreamy, alt-pop sound to songs by bands like Plush, Dream Syndicate, Sebadoh, and Del Shannon -- to accompany the book. Pernice Brothers proper are back as of today, and you can stream the new album, Goodbye, Killer, out on Ashmont Records, at Spinner.

Also out today is the new Gaslight Anthem, American Slang. But we've already talked about that. And the new Tom Petty album, Mojo, which is his first with the Heartbreakers in eight years, is in stores and online. Both are streamable at Spinner.

If Land of Plenty finds its way into the right hands, it is not hard to imagine it blowing up on the internet. It's got just enough hazy reverb for the tastemaking blogs, but with strong melodies backing it up. Style and substance. It calls to mind the best Deerhunter songs, or maybe a shoegaze Kinks. You should just go download it right now. Here.
Giving fans a faster turnaround than with his last album, Relapse, two tracks from Eminem's follow-up, Recovery, have already made their way around music blogs this morning.
Though set for a June 22 release, the album has already received a fair share of eyebrow raises for some of the collaborations on the track list. For example P!nk, pop rocker and one of the early adopters of symbols in place of letters (suck it, Ke$ha), joins Em on track #4, "We Won't Back Down."
But the two tracks in question are "Love the Way You Lie" featuring Rihanna -- a dark take on love reminiscent of "Kim" from The Marshall Mathers LP -- and "No Love" with Lil Wayne.
New York Magazine's Vulture blog has a post where you can listen to the tracks; download the MP3s (at your own risk) at On Smash and tell us what you think.
