Team Bear Club, the Lawrence collective that consists of guys like Greg Enemy, Ebony Tusks, Robocopter and Morri$, is a prolific crew, throwing parties and booking shows on the reg. The weekly Goomba Rave has been going for a couple of months now, every Thursday night at the Bottleneck (737 New Hampshire, in Lawrence).
We recently talked with Phil Canty, Bear Club's official party wrangler (also a musician), about Goomba and keeping things fresh.
Starting January 19, the Sidecar (the bar adjacent to the Beaumont Club) will be hosting a new weekly event called Acoustic Nights. “We plan on it being an ongoing event, but obviously want to see how the first month does,” says Terry Taylor, of Hunt Industries and Mammoth. Three acts are lined up so far:
(Via Pitch food blog Fat City): There isn't much that Fat City can add to all the media drama stirred up after Beena Rajah, the owner of Jardine's restaurant and jazz club, impulsively fired every member of her venue's staff last week. All kinds of accusations are flying about Miss Raja's management style every witch, I mean which, way. And the comments about the vivacious Miss R on many of the local blogs are scathing.
I would hate to see Jardine's close — this city has far too few jazz and blues clubs as it is. And the food and service were good. But was it really such a terrible place to work?
Reading The Kansas City Star's breakdown of the new curfew, it's hard to see how it'll be enforceable without stretching police and city resources. Here's the curfew (via the Star):
From Memorial Day weekend through the last Sunday in September, the curfew will be 9 p.m. for all youths under age 18 in five entertainment districts: the Country Club Plaza, Westport, Downtown, 18th and Vine, and Zona Rosa.Elsewhere during the summer, the curfew will be 10 p.m. for 15 and under and 11 p.m. for 16- and 17-year-olds.
From October through Memorial Day, the curfew will be 11 p.m. weeknights and midnight on Friday and Saturday.
The winter hours are the same as the curfew ordinance that was in effect since 1991 (... curfew for all youths 17 and under unaccompanied by an adult was midnight to 6 a.m. Fridays and Saturdays and 11 p.m. to 6 a.m. the rest of the week).
Problem is, there isn't just violence on the Plaza.
As one bar prepares to close its doors, another gets granted a new lease on life. Over the last few weeks, I've been receiving little tidbits of news here and there about how Gusto Lounge was changing (in a positive way), and the interior was gettin' a spruce. That's now confirmed.
I'm happy my car has a cassette player, guys.
Bobby Sauder and Rolf Petermann started a cassette label in January called whateverforever. In the next few weeks, the label will release its fifth (W4E-005 Bo & the Locomotive - On My Way) and sixth (W4E-006 Karma Vision - Pizza Power) tapes.
To celebrate the launch, the label is throwing a whateverforever Label Launch Party on May 26 at the Eighth Street Taproom in Lawrence. Agent X-12, Oils, This Is My Condition, and Dean Monkey and the Dropouts will perform.
They're also are working on releasing a Live at Pizza Power compilation tape on whateverforever, which will showcase some of the acts that have played at the house.

The following two events caught our attention because they are (1) interesting, (2) weird (both events) and (3) involve boozing it up with locals in Elvis garb (the first event). All that just makes you say, hot damn, right?

Knuckleheads has added a second Rainmakers reunion show on May 15. The first show scheduled on May 14 is sold-out. The May 15 show is $15. Doors open at 7 p.m. I doubt I need to tell you to hurry, but yeah -- hurry.
