Chrissy Amphlett, Divinyls singer, dead at 53

Amphletts one U.S. hit lives on.
  • Amphlett's one U.S. hit lives on.

It's a wonder that Tipper Gore and her legion of censors never went after Chrissy Amphlett, lead singer of the one-hit-wonder Australian band Divinyls. Amphlett died Sunday in New York from multiple sclerosis and breast cancer at the age of 53.

The group's 1991 hit, "I Touch Myself," is a dirty little radio love letter in a time long before sexting. As grunge began to take over more of the airwaves and MTV, "I Touch Myself" was practically a throwback when it clawed its way to No. 4 on the U.S. charts the same year that Nirvana's Nevermind was transfixing young listeners.

Earlier this year, Danny's Big Easy held a benefit for the jazz vocalist and supporter Ray Reed, who was battling cancer. We're sad to report that we received word this morning that Reed has passed away.

Reed figured prominently into a 2010 Pitch feature about the Mutual Musicians Foundation.

At the dawn of this long, hot summer, Philipp Vitti, the operations manager at Gusto Lounge (38th and Broadway), sent out an extraordinarily verbose press release informing the public that the bar was getting a face-lift. Things would be different at the new Gusto. No more tweakers buzzing around the bar. No more crackheads passing out in the corners upstairs.

In a recent press release, the Kansas City Civic Opera announced that the organization will dissolve. Citing "declining funding and attendance," the volunteer group's board of directors voted to dissolve the not-for-profit corporation. The Civic Opera's last performance of its 26-year history was Conrad Susa's Transformations in March of this year. You can read the whole of the press release on the Civic Opera's website. Sorry for the delay in bringing this to you, but it seems to have gotten caught by our spam filters.

Crosstown Station's farewell show will be a big giant party

Crosstown Station prepares for its farewell show.

Crosstown Station, in happier times.
  • Crosstown Station, in happier times.
As of October 2, it's all over for Crosstown Station. The Crossroads venue had a good, albeit too short, run, and we're sad to see it go. Happy, though, to hear news of a fine farewell show for the venue on Saturday, October 1. Lots of solid local acts on the bill, both upstairs at Press Bar and downstairs on the main stage. Bonus: The venue "needs to get rid of all this booze, so drinks will be priced as low as possible."

LeRoi Johnson, king of reviewers, rides into the sunset

Pitch pioneer LeRoi Johnson in his PennyLane days.
  • Pitch pioneer LeRoi Johnson in his PennyLane days.

LeRoi Johnson, whose two-fisted record reviews and thoroughgoing curiosity helped define The Pitch in its first decade, has died. He was 57 and in recent years had suffered congestive heart failure, diabetes and kidney disease.

Last year, to help this paper mark its 30th anniversary, I called Johnson to talk about his days in KC record stores and alt-weekly publishing. He was gracious and funny, and his recollections and opinions — given more airing than a conversation limited by my deadline and his health allowed — could have, and should have, filled a book.

Death at Kanrocksas

Posted by on Sat, Aug 6, 2011 at 3:06 PM

The KCK Fire Department was called to the Kanrocksas campgrounds this morning to investigate an unresponsive person, who was then pronounced dead on the scene, reports KMBC. Apparently the man was in his 20s, which sounds like an overdose or maybe dehydration. More as we hear it. If you're headed out today, drink a bunch of water and be careful.

Kurt Cobain in Lawrence with William S. Burroughs

Posted by on Tue, Apr 5, 2011 at 2:07 PM

Today April 8 is the 17th anniversary of the day that Nirvana's Kurt Cobain was found dead after shooting himself at age 27. Here's a photo, thanks to Rolling Stone, of author William S. Burroughs and Cobain at Burrough's Lawrence, Kansas, home. Cobain later said they mostly talked about Leadbelly. R.I.P, Kurt.
