I drive past what will soon officially be the Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts on my way to work every day. It's a constant motion of trucks and hard hats and dust and concrete outside that place all day long. It perturbs me, if I am being perfectly honest. I am ready for that sucker to open on September 16. But such is the price one pays for what is looking like a pretty amazing arts venue. One of the first impressive acts lined up is performance artist Laurie Anderson, on October 9.

On Saturday, the Geeks Whom Drink will be auditioning potential quizmasters down at Raglan Road. Perhaps this is the moment you have been waiting for your entire life?

Last year's record, Dracula Boots
Kid Congo Powers has an impressive history in notoriously weird bands: the Gun Club, Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, and the Cramps. It follows that his new group, Kid Congo Powers & the Pink Monkey Birds, follows in the great bizarre ones' footsteps. Catch Kid Congo and his new getup in Lawrence on Sunday at the Jackpot. Spook Lights open.
Watch Kid Congo live after the jump (and check out his sick Mariachi outfit).

Stik Figa's on Twitter. As are others.
Are you still all anti-Twitter because you think it's a bunch of self-absorbed dorks writing about what they had for breakfast? Wake up, fool! Twitter is super useful and time-saving. (Nerd voice): It's like a mix between Facebook and an RSS feed, basically. (Pushes glasses up bridge of nose with index finger.)
More and more local bands seem to understand the value of having a Twitter account, so we've compiled a partial list of them, with links. You can look at it right now!

Auternus is dead serious...about needing a new bass player.
"Auternus is a mostly instrumental band whose main influences include ISIS, Red Sparowes, Mogwai, Russian Circles, etc. If you are not familiar with these bands and their overall sound, we respectfully ask that you not apply. We are looking for an experienced bass player who has the desire to pursue this type of music and a positive attitude that can fully commit to this project, as well as their own gear with which to do so."
