"Just like people, pets and pizza parlors, festival stages need names, too," says the Kanrocksas website today, announcing a contest whereby ordinary Joes like me and you -- guys who never dreamed of naming a stage! -- can have a say in naming one of the stages at Kanrocksas. And prizes -- oh, yes, there are prizes.

It is a well-rounded group of individuals that report to you from this Wayward Blog. In addition to knowing certain things about music, we also enjoy drinking and eating delicious substances! The finest of tastes, we have!
And so it comes to pass that we bring you news of the Westend Stampede, a benefit walk through western Midtown establishments complete with complimentary Boulevard beers and tasty food plates. It's organized by the Westend Merchants of Kansas City to benefit the Westport Cooperative Services' Meals on Wheels program, and afterward there's live music at the Record Bar.

Boo! (like a ghost). Photo by Todd Zimmer.
Terry Taylor plays bass with local metal monsters Hammerlord. He's also the main guy at Hunt Industries, which books shows at the Beaumont, Granada, Record Bar and other venues across the Midwest.
Perhaps not so out of step with the brutality of Hammerlord's sound, Taylor is also a horror fan, and was recently featured in HorrorHound magazine, which is a thing that exists, in its Collector's Spotlight section. "To show how truly nerdy I am, I got a full-page spread in HorrorHound magazine," he emailed us. Among other things, the spread reveals that Taylor has been a Kiss fan since age 5.
Not earth-shattering news exactly, but I thought it was interesting.

As part of its Anti-Music issue, the magazine's published "A Reader and Writer's Guide to Reading Writing About Music," an alphabetized glossary of words and phrases music critics use, accompanied by explanations. "Returns to" and "Say What You Will" are my favorite entries.

Today, 'Favorite New Band.' Tomorrow, 'Best New Music'?
Pitchfork itself hasn't weighed in on the band yet, but maybe this'll encourage somebody over there to give Try Brother a listen. Peep the full quote after the jump.

Fourth of July.
I'm listening to Explode! right now for the first time and can report that it's got lots of horns, some smart lines (Don't be so sure of things / Not even wedding rings), inviting melodies and a generally fun, ramshackle vibe to it. We'll have a more professional review in the days ahead. In the meantime, the band's planned two record-release shows in celebration of Explode!, one in KC and one in Lawrence.
