The Donkeys, with Advance Base and O Giant Man — tonight at RecordBar

Everybody's got a dark-horse band they firmly believe should be way more popular, and one of mine is the Donkeys, a San Diego act making some of the most likable folk rock I'm aware of currently. The band draws on American Beauty-era Grateful Dead and goes heavy on the Laurel Canyon beach-bum vibes - it's all very mellow and beautiful and California, like a Toastered-out Instagram photo. See 'em tonight (Tuesday) at RecordBar. O Giant Man and Advance Base open.

Tonight: Aziz Ansari at the Midland

A la fellow comedian Louis C.K., Aziz Ansari - the hilarious guy in Parks and Recreation, Scrubs, Human Giant, Funny People and a bunch of other things - is selling his most recent stand-up special, Dangerously Delicious, straight to fans online for $5. He has already moved on to new material, though, which he performs tonight as part of his "Buried Alive" tour.

Caveman, with Lotus Plaza (Deerhunter side project), tonight at RecordBar

No luck trolling Craigslist for tickets to tonight's m83 show at the Granada? RecordBar is offering a pretty solid alternative.

Caveman advances a calm, reverb-y, rock agenda that calls to mind an overcast day at the beach. The Brooklyn band adds synths and kinky percussion to the equation, though, which feels very of-the-now. (Listen here.) Lockett Pundt, guitarist of the acclaimed dream-rock act Deerhunter, recently released his second solo album, Spooky Action at a Distance. Pundt wrote "Desire Lines," the best song on Deerhunter's most recent album, Halcyon Digest, and the smart, sprawling guitar-pop on Spooky Action confirms that he's really starting to hit his stride as a songwriter. MiniBar hosts Kansas City's inaugural Nerd Nite tonight

Posted by Nick Spacek on Wed, Apr 18, 2012 at 8:00 AM

For those lucky few who've been attending the Lawrence edition of Nerd Nite, the appearance of the Kansas City version has been eagerly anticipated for over a month now. Having attended all of the Lawrence shows since last November, I can state that it's a fine way to gain knowledge, as well as a pleasant buzz. (Full disclosure: I will be presenting at the Lawrence Nerd Nite in May.)

Or, as KC organizer Jason Kovacs states in the press release, "Sometimes you hear that it's like TED talks combined with a cocktail party, or maybe if the Discovery Channel did a live show at your favorite bar, and Neil DeGrasse Tyson brought the keg."

Tonight's Kansas City debut of the free event is also a debut of sorts for MiniBar, a new venture from the owners of RecordBar. The whole thing kicks off at 7 p.m. MiniBar is located at 3810 Broadway, in the old Gusto Lounge space. If the Lawrence events are any indication, you'll want to get there early, as seats go fast, and you don't want to miss such topics as "Broccoli and Other Fractals," "Info Nation" and "My Life As a Sex Writer; or, Why Carrie Bradshaw Is Not a Feminist."

Third Seven, tonight at the Brick

Posted by Abbie Stutzer on Thu, Feb 16, 2012 at 7:23 AM

Third Seven is the name of an artist, recording studio and record label, and artist collective, and all are dedicated to creating and producing well-made music that’s free of greed. Most artists who collaborate with Third Seven (the label) dabble with ambient, acoustic and experimental music. One of the prominent musicians behind Third Seven is Billy Mickelson. We recently spoke with him and found out about Third Seven’s beginnings, and how audiences are reacting to Third Seven’s performances.

Tonight, you've got two opportunities to enjoy some punk rock and do some good for the Lawrence community. We've already noted Punk Rock Karaoke at the Replay, but what of our all-ages punk rockers? Hit up Love Garden, where Art for Skate's Sake offers both a photo exhibition and a show with performances from E100 and Stiff Middle Fingers. All proceeds benefit the Centennial Skate Park re-vamp project. The skate park was built in 1998, and while it has been resurfaced since, the size and condition of the park could use some serious rehabilitation. Everything gets kicking at 6 p.m., and the bands start at 7.

NEEEERRRRRRRRRRRRRDS!!! (Also, booze)

Posted by Nick Spacek on Wed, Dec 14, 2011 at 9:23 AM

revenge-of-the-nerds.jpg

After the successful test run at Pachamama's Star Bar last month (check the Larryville Chronicles to see what went down), Nerd Nite is officially a go in Lawrence. Tonight, the event — "an informal gathering at which nerds get together for nerdery of all sorts ... to meet, drink and learn something new" — has its official debut. Think of November's presentations as a cocktail party, while this is the debutante ball. In any event, you'll have the chance to see three speakers on such interesting topics as "Superheroes as Symbols of Justice." There are also drink specials and a chance to hobnob with really interesting people. Doors open at 7:30 p.m., and the free event kicks off at 8. For more information, see the website

It's cold. Like, really cold. And how does one beat the cold? Chili, spiked apple cider and jazz, of course.

Tonight at Clyde Manor apartments (350 East Armour Blvd.), people can enjoy all of the above. In hopes to bring in new residents and entertain current inhabitants, the Manor will host an evening of jazz, courtesy of Hermon Mehari and friends. In addition, attendees can enjoy building tours, a raffle and seasonal treats.

The lineup for KJHK's Farmer's Ball is a little different than originally announced. Dishes have had to remove themselves from competition due to "injuries," but have been replaced by the next highest vote-getter, thePhantom*. That makes the lineup as follows for tonight's show at the Jackpot:
Atilla
Captain Ahab and the Narwhals
thePhantom*
Fire in the Churchyard
Instant Tradition
Panda Circus
Royal
Strider

In other news for the station, the Washington Post's College, Inc. blog just named KJHK the No. 2 college radio station in the country.
