As if the chance to see David Bazan perform wasn't enough to lure us out, the singer-songwriter — formerly of Pedro the Lion and Headphones — is appearing Friday in Lawrence with fellow Seattle act Passenger String Quartet. In September, Bazan released a collaboration album with the quartet (David Bazan + Passenger String Quartet: Volume 1) featuring reimagined versions of Pedro the Lion tunes and some of Bazan's solo work.

Pure Bathing Culture and Tennis are at the Granada tonight

Pure Bathing Culture - PARTISAN RECORDS

This Tuesday double headliner is a match made in 1980s synth-pop heaven: Denver husband-wife duo Tennis and Portland, Oregon, male-female duo Pure Bathing Culture, whose 2013 Moon Tides garnered more than a few (completely warranted) comparisons with the music of Beach House. The former's Alaina Moore and Patrick Riley have just released Ritual in Repeat, an album full of catchy surf-pop vibes. It's the kind of thing that makes you want to rent a boat and sail away. Pure Bathing Culture and Tennis are likely to bring out the best in each other's sounds at the Granada, and you couldn't pick two bands better suited for an easygoing weeknight.

Gwar will get you in the mood for Halloween tonight at the Granada

In March, Gwar lead singer and bassist Oderus Urungus — the stage name for Dave Brockie, the final remaining founding member of the Virginia thrash-metal act — died of a drug overdose. Well, the 30-year-old band has soldiered on anyway, with a new singer called Vulvatron and a new singer-bassist who goes by Blöthar. Onstage, the act still presents as human-eating warrior aliens, garbed in full horror-film-ready costume and makeup.

One year ago, Melbourne, Australia singer-songwriter Courtney Barnett was opening the showcase at New York's CMJ Music Marathon. Now, she's headlining her second tour across the United States. Her first tour, earlier in the summer, sold out most venues it hit.

Barnett's been playing all these shows in support of the stateside release of her album, The Double EP: A Sea of Split Peas, a collection of two self-released EPs she recorded on her own. She's now got a full band, and her hypnotic, bluesy rock is poised to fully infiltrate ears across the world when Barnett releases her first full-length early next year. Ahead of tonight's show at Riot Room, we spoke with Barnett by phone as she made her way to a show in Chicago.

It may come as a surprise to longtime Ani DiFranco fans that Allergic to Water, her next album, due out in November, is not the usual messy bundle of furious political songs. The 44-year-old singer-songwriter and activist has been carrying the torch for a host of hot-button topics since she founded her label, Righteous Babe, 24 years ago. But in early interviews, DiFranco has said her focus has shifted on Water.

The new album from electronic-music project SBTRKT, Wonder Where We Land, is crazy good. Producer and mastermind Aaron Jerome has composed it like a grown-up adventure story, and each song is a trembling page turn from a dark, new avenue. Singer Sampha is with him for much of the record, his low voice elevated by atmospheric synths and layers of trip-hop beats. It's certain that the Liberty Hall crowd will find plenty to dance to tonight.

Ryan Adams is at Uptown tonight, tickets still available

Posted By on Mon, Oct 20, 2014 at 12:33 PM

adams.jpg

For his 14th studio album, released in September, Ryan Adams decided that it was time to self-title. What is he trying to tell us? Did he run out of ideas for album names? Or could it be that the 11 songs speak to who Adams is more than any other record? If that's the case, rejoice, fans of Tom Petty: Adams' latest is full of 1980s and '90s rock homages. But Adams is also a heavy package of emotions.
